It's LIAM month...is your family protected?

No, it's not the name of a member of a former popular boy band. September is Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM). It shares the month with National Guide Dog Month, National Honey Month and Leukemia Awareness Month just to mention a few. We have all heard of life insurance so the awareness is obviously there. What may not be there is the steps to do something about it. Here are some interesting facts about Life Insurance:

  • 75 million American families count on life insurers to protect their financial futures
  • Life insurance products pay out an average of $1.5 billion every day in the U.S. Social Security pays out an average of $1.9 billion each day.
  • 2.5 million U.S. jobs are directly supported by the life insurance industry
  • Life insurers have $4.5 trillion invested in the U.S. economy, making the industry one of the largest sources of capital in the nation
  • The life insurance industry is the #1 investor in corporate bonds.

With so many choices available when it comes to planning for the future it's hard to know what is the right choice for you and your family right now. Indexed Universal Life, for example, protects your family in the event of your untimely death, while at the same time gives you a steady income when you retire- a tax-free death benefit to your family and a tax-free retirement income to you for the rest of your life. It's also permanent, meaning that you won't lose it when you change jobs. In addition it covers you in the case of a critical illness (cancer, hear attack, stroke) and also in case of long-term care needs. Consider it life insurance you don't have to die to use! Let us show you the benefits of life insurance to benefit both you and your family. Contact us for more information.

Yes, we do life insurance too!

Recently I was talking to a client and she asked if I offer life insurance. I thought by now everyone would know that in addition to offering 403b's, IRA's, Roth IRA's and other savings plans for the past 23 years that yes, we have also offered life insurance. Life insurance these days not only offers a tax-free death benefit to your family upon your death, but also tax-free retirement income to you while you live! In addition, it includes long-term care and critical illness (heart attack, cancer, stroke, etc.) benefits at no extra charge! Contact us for more information.

Get a pay raise? Shelter it from taxes

Several school districts have either approved or are in negotiations for pay increases for both classified and certificated employees. Depending on your pay, this could mean hundreds of extra dollars each month in addition to "retro" pay. Taxes will take a considerable portion of the pay raise, so why not add to your 403b, thus keeping your taxes low, earn high er interest, and build your retirement savings that much faster? Do you know a school employee who isn't contributing? Let us know and we can help.

Earn a 5% interest bonus on each deposit for 7 years!

If you're not already getting a 5% interest bonus on your money, now may be the time to start. Introducing the Paramount 5 which credits you a 5% interest bonus on each deposit you make into your 403b, IRA ,ROTH, or SEP IRA. You will also be credited additional interest based on the S&P 500 and a fixed interest account.

This network of individuals and business owners will donate time and services to schools and organizations throughout the community. In exchange, the business will receive free advertising and promotional recognition. It may be donating items for a school carnival or canned-food to a homeless shelter. If interested, or if you know someone who would be, please contact us.

Waite a minute
By Jim Waite

Recently while waiting to see my wife and son off at the airport for our son's routine check-up in New York I ran across an issue of "Jet Set" magazine, with the subtitle "The Affluent Lifestyle Magazine." It was complimentary, so I figured why not check out what type of things are advertised in a magazine designed for the "Rich and Famous." It featured Samuel Jackson on the cover, who according to the feature article, is the highest grossing actor of all- time with over 120 film credits to his name and a net  worth in the billions. Not bad, especially considering he's 70 and didn't start in movies until his 40's. This magazine didn't have the usual ads like you see at the check-out counter at the grocery store. There were, of course, airplane ads. Not travel ads for American or United to places like Palm Springs or Vegas, but rather airplane ads for airplanes you could buy and fly...or to employ your own private pilot. No price of course was included, so I googled it. Only a mere $58 Million! There were also ads for private islands to fly your new jet to and luxurious mansions which include a garage for your plane. There was an ad to have lunch with Warren Buffet. A chance of a lifetime, with the opening minimum bid starting at only $25,000. I wonder if lunch was included or if you had to foot the bill for that too? There were "customized" golf clubs for only about $600...for one club. There were private yachts with two swimming pools, dance floor, luxurious suites...A bed  advertised as "The bed you've been dreaming of" sold by a company named Primadonna. Need I say more?  The ad that really caught my eye, however, was an ad for the Bugatti La Voiture Noire for only $19 Million. If a photo of this "most expensive" car wasn't shown I wouldn't have any idea what it was. I thought maybe a rare painting by Van Gogh or something. I thought who would spend that kind of money on a car? Not to mention insurance, upkeep, registration, etc? Of course if you were Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO, $19 Million would be a drop in the bucket compared to his $215 Million a day average income or $137 billion net worth. He drives a 2013 Honda Accord. Maybe that's why he's worth so much. He's learned to not live extravagant and save more than he spends.-a lesson many of us could learn from.
So with September here and fall just around the corner, maybe it's time that we pause and reflect. Reflect on those things that make us happy. For many of the "rich and famous" money, and lots of it, hasn't brought them happiness, but in many cases heartache and even death. Look no further than celebrities who make millions of dollars and their personal lives are a mess. Happiness comes from within and the relationships that we have with those we love. It can't be manufactured, stolen or even bought with millions of dollars. It comes from the heart. And that's the greatest wealth of all.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
As many of you know our youngest son, Ethan, age 12,  was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a very rare, yet aggressive, bone cancer last August. After a few surgeries and bone regeneration treatments he is now cancer free and able to walk on both feet, avoiding amputation. To recognize those children (past or present) faced with childhood cancer I am donating a portion of the proceeds of my books Better than Best and    Better than Best: Be a Friend to childhood cancer research.
