CANBERRA CAMP 2019
Our Year 6 class had a fantastic experience on their Canberra Camp!
Principal

Dear Parents,
Open Classroom Evening
Have you ever wondered what our Sheddies, Year 2 or Year 6 students learn and what their classrooms are like? On Tuesday 24th September we will be holding an Open Classroom evening for all current parents, grandparents, and friends. This will be a fabulous opportunity to see the various types of learning and work examples that students in different classes undertake throughout the year. We intend to create an Open Classroom learning trail that leads and shows you some of the work of our students as they move through Quintilian. Please save this date in your calendar.

From the Board

Hello Everyone,

We have welcomed a number of new students to our school over the past few weeks and I have been delighted to meet a few of these families. It is heartwarming to hear how welcomed and included they feel. At Quintilian School we take pride in our sense of community, from the smallest acts to those of greater support when needed. Thank you to all those who step forward when needed to help foster this amazing community spirit.

Quintilian Road Safety Concerns
An ongoing matter before the Board is the growing concerns as to the speed and number of vehicles on Quintilian Rd jeopardising the safety of our children. In recent weeks we also note the opening of the new Bus Depot on Brockway Rd and the resultant new bus traffic on Quintilian Rd.

Amazing Canberra strikes a chord!
CANBERRA CAMP 2019
The excited Year 6 class with smiles on their faces after an amazing Canberra adventure. Ready to board the plane home.
The Year 6 Class have just returned from a great camp in Canberra!  They visited The War Memorial, Questacon, The High Court of Australia, The National Gallery, The National Film and Sound Archives and both Parliament Houses. During their visit to Parliament House, they went into the House and Representatives and the Senate and participated in a role play activity designed to learn how a bill becomes a law. They were also invited to tour the Dutch Embassy and had the opportunity to listen to the Deputy Head of Mission, Erik de Feijter, talk about the role of an Ambassador.

At the National Capital Exhibition Centre they discovered why Canberra was chosen to be our nation’s capital and learnt how the design for our Nation’s capital was decided. After three very busy days in Canberra they headed off to ski in Thredbo and for some, experience snow for the first time.

Over the past two terms the Year 6 students have been studying Australia’s system of law and government and investigated experiences of Australian democracy and citizenship. Many of the activities during the camp support the history components of the National Curriculum. The Australian Government recognises the importance of being able to visit the national capital as part of the Year 6 Civics and Citizenship education programme and contribute funding through the Federal Government’s Pacer Programme to assist in the cost of this excursion. It allows us to visit the capital to learn about federation and democracy first hand.

Library News - Book Week
BOOK WEEK 2019
Book Week 2019 was a huge success with many wonderful activities throughout the week and into this week as well. Kathryn LeFroy, a local author from Fremantle Press came in to share her book, Alex and the Alpacas Save the World.  She spoke about being a storyteller and got the children from Upper Primary to participate in creating engaging stories of their own.

On Friday, we had the Quintilian Book Week Parade, which was a fabulous success with so many wonderful costumes across the school. A huge thank you to all the families for participating in this. I appreciate all you did to help your child with their costume. There is a display in the library window with photos across the year groups so be sure to have a peek next time you are passing.

We also had a book draw at the end of the assembly where more than 20 students had their names drawn to choose a book to take home.

And, finally, on Tuesday morning, Crystal and Luke performed Big Dreams from the CBCA Book Week in Schools program from Performance Education. The performance had a fantastic message of being brave and strong even when that little pesky voice we can hear in our heads from time to time tries to talk us out of doing the things we want. The performers incorporated three new, short listed books into their story to support their message while also demonstrating the importance of reading.

Thanks again for all your support!

One Big Voice - Choir spectacular
ONE BIG VOICE
Music Michelle took our amazing Quintilian Choir to the One Big Voice on Friday 30 August. This was the 20th One Big Voice event, with over 7,000 school students involved. Students participate in a non-competitive massed choir, building musical confidence and bringing the pure joy of singing and music to students.

As Plato said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

Sustainability News
Garden
The Year 3s have been working hard in the veggie garden and the fun of harvesting has now begun. The students were very excited to hold their first market and show off some of their enormous produce, the turnips were amazing. If enormous turnips are your thing, find us outside Year 2 on Friday afternoon and support our mini market.
The PP's have been busy collecting bread tags for recycling and we would like to extend the program to the whole school. So why bread tags?

Breadtags For Wheelchairs
A wonderful organisation Breadtags For Wheelchairs collects bread tags, stopping them from going into landfill, sells to a recycling organisation and uses the proceeds to buy wheelchairs for people in need. More information about the organisation can be found at https://www.breadtagsforwheelchairs.co.za

Along with the collection point outside Mel's PP classroom, a labelled jar can be found in the foyer where you can drop off all your bread tags.

Frog Bog
Our first plants have gone in! The Sustainability club has been busy cleaning out the old bog and today was a great day, with much excitement the first plants were potted and sunk into the bog. Fingers crossed frogs move in soon.

Recycling
Another great recycling opportunity for Quinnie kids and families. We have registered with Teracycle for their
Writing Instruments Recycling Programme. Not only are we recycling plastic pens, markers and highlighter, this also raises money for the school. The more we recycle the more we receive, so get on board and bring in your old pens, textas and highlighters.

A recycling bin can be found in our recycling station near Jim's Year 3 classroom as well as outside Mel's PP room.

Sheddies Art Gallery
The Sheddies Art Gallery evening has been a wonderful part of our School for many years. This year we have placed the event on the same night as our Open Classroom evening and we hope this will allow all parents and other visitors to see the Sheddies creative work.

Principal's Coffee Mornings
Later this term I will hold a series of 'Principal and Parent Coffee Mornings’ in the Maker Space room next to the library. This is an opportunity for a casual chat, to give feedback, hear about new initiatives and to get a better understanding of my vision for Quintilian. I look forward to having a coffee and a chat with many parents.

Netball
Our netball teams have just finished another excellent winter season at Matthews Netball Centre. Special thanks to our parents and former students who coached, and especially to Mel Rayment who coordinates the netball and also coaches.

From the Board cont'd

This matter is a priority for the School and as recently as last week Principal Neil and I have met with representatives from the City of Nedlands regarding our on-going concerns and their future plans to improve road safety. Local residents are also championing this cause. Principal Neil spoke on Tuesday 27 August at the Council meeting to again put forward our case for a safer road.

The Board has agreed that we need to increase our fight for safer conditions for our children and families. To this end we are considering conducting our own count of vehicles and recording, via video, traffic conditions outside the school. We will also be asking you to support our endeavours and show the City of Nedlands your own concerns through a petition that will be circulated in the coming weeks.

In addition we have placed a book at reception in which we ask all of our staff and parents to make note of any incidents, close calls, speeding cars, trucks, buses or other concerns regarding Quintilian Rd.

I will be presenting the petition, the documented incidents and results of our own surveillance to Council at their next meeting. Principal Neil and I will also be meeting with the Mayor with a copy of this information and to discuss further.

To improve safety we have also instigated a REVERSE IN ONLY policy in our back carpark near the ELC and also for all non-parallel parking on Quintilian Rd. There is much research to show this provides improved safety in carpark areas. We also remind all users of the kiss and ride off Brockway Rd to NOT leave their vehicles at any time.

Updated School Guidelines
As part of the Board’s ongoing review of school policies the Quintilian School Camp Guidelines have been updated. We ask that all parents take the time to read this important document.

School Board member details have also been updated on the School’s website.
Feel free to contact us with your ideas and thoughts on any topic via email or speak with us in and around the playground.

I hope all of our dad’s, grandads and all those who take on that important role for our families, had a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday 1 September.

See you all soon,
Sue-anne
