Hi  <<First Name*>>

A very warm welcome to all our new subscribers as well as existing supporters!

In September and October, there's a lot planned both locally and nationally to pressure the government to tell the truth about the increasing climate and ecological emergency; to start serious work on reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to set up a Citizens' Assembly.

Later in September, we have a whole week of events planned in support of the global youth strike, to hold our Council to account and to highlight the UN Climate Summit taking place in New York...  There'll be another newsletter in a couple of days to tell you more about this.

Are you dithering about going to the XR Rebellion in London?

If so, you might like to check out Dr Rupert Read talking about the Case for Rebellion and our own Tina Teearu talking about why she got involved (see below) and/or come along to our informal get-together tomorrow evening:

Get-together for those interested in joining the International Rebellion in London:
This Wednesday 4th September, 6 - 8pm, at the Old Post Office Pub, 1 Milk Street, SY1 1SZ.
Are you thinking of coming to the International Rebellion in London in October? It's going to be a BIG ONE! If so, please come to this informal meet up in Shrewsbury to chat, make plans and raise any questions as we prepare to Rebel For Life.

Hear from Tina Teearu here:
As you probably know by now, XR is planning a big “International Rebellion” taking place in capital cities around the world starting on 7 October and potentially lasting until 20 October.  Similar in format and strategy to the Action last April, people are mobilising from across the UK to join the uprising in London to protect our planet – whether for a day or for the whole fortnight. It's been shown time and time again that big business and political elites will ONLY take notice if they are hit where it hurts - in their pockets. Therefore XR's tactics are specifically designed to disrupt "business as usual" in the heart of power (London) and in the process bring the whole issue to the attention of the mass media so that more and more people join us until we can be ignored no longer and change happens.

I care deeply about plants and animals and natural habitats and am frustrated by the lack of progress in saving them - everything just seems to be getting worse despite decades of environmental conservation work by thousands of people.  So, in April, driven by the urgency of the situation, I decided to join the XR Rebellion in London for 3 days.  I had only just joined XR and learned about their tactics of "getting people arrested".  At first I resisted the idea, but then I began to understand that "conventional" protests such as mass marches simply hadn't worked.  Maybe, just maybe, this non-violent course of action, carried out by thousands of people, might just do the trick.

As an ordinary law-abiding person I didn't have the courage to put myself forward as an "Arrestable", however at the NVDA training that I went to it was made clear that being arrested was only one of several options available.  Most of all, XR needed people to BE there, supporting the cause, blocking roads, swarming bridges, playing instruments, singing, handing out leaflets, interacting with the public, looking after others' wellbeing, meeting people on their release from police stations etc.  Weight of numbers was very important and for that you need lots of "Non-arrestables" as well as Arrestables.  At the end of the day, it’s usually quite easy to avoid arrest - just move if you're told to move - and go to the next place where you're needed!

I was surprised by how well organised it all was - each area-group had clearly been coached in what to do and what not to do and had sent one or more "Affinity Groups".  These are just groups of people who (like me) didn't necessarily know each other beforehand, but met ahead of the event to support each other while we were in London.  XR provided free food on site and helped with any well-being issues.  Communication was by a private-messaging app on our phones, which meant that we stayed one step ahead of the Police - if extra support was needed anywhere the call went out and reinforcements arrived!  It was all very exciting, but best of all, I felt full of hope - it was wonderful that so many people of all ages, professions, religions etc had come together to fight for our World at last... It felt wonderful to be DOING something.

And so in October I will be going to London again, just for a couple of days.  I hope very much to meet you there, and join thousands of other caring individuals in solidarity and love for Planet Earth and all it's inhabitants.  Before it's too late.

If you’re planning to come to London, we strongly recommend that you join one of the following NVDA trainings (whatever role you’re planning to take):
