MA/MFA Computational Arts Degree Show

It's difficult to believe that it's only a year since I started as a lecturer in Creative Computing at Goldsmiths. The full schedule for this year's MA/MFA Computational Arts Degree Show is now online, including a packed programme of performances, workshops and talks.

The opening is on Thursday 5th September at 5pm in the St James Hatcham converted church space. The exhibition runs until Sunday 8th September. All the events are free, but if you would like to attend please register at Eventbrite

AI and Art Futures Symposium

At The Barbican I am exhibiting work as part of the ‘AI and Art Futures Symposium’. I will be showing examples of my 3D printed ‘Morphogenetic Vase Forms’ as well as demonstrating experiments I have been doing with VR. The symposium is being organized by UCL and the Arts Council, and is taking place on Thursday 12th September.

Yearning for the Infinite

As part of their focus this year on AI and emerging technology, The Barbican have commissioned Max Cooper to create a new AV performance. The result is ‘Yearning for the Infinite’, and I've been working with Max to create new visuals that explore ideas of the infinite and our obsession with the unobtainable in a world filled with data. Other artists involved in the project include Nick Cobby, Jessica In and Martin Krzywinski.
The premiere is being held in the main hall at The Barbican on Saturday 28th September. It promises to be spectacular immersive experience, with eight 5k projectors beaming imagery to accompany the music.

Emergence Blu-ray

Max Cooper has just released a limited edition Blu-ray of his ‘Emergence’ AV show. Max has been working with engineers at Dolby Atmos to capture his performance in 24bit 48KHz 7.1 surround sound. The disk features 90 minutes of high definition animated visuals including some of my original ‘Cellular Forms’ work.

V&A Digital Design Weekend

A number of artists involved in the recent ‘Event Two’ exhibition at the Royal College of Art have been invited by the V&A to create a pop-up reprise of selected work from ‘Event Two’ at this year’s Digital Design Weekend. I will be showing my interactive experimental work ‘Sensitivity and Stimulation’, featuring stereoscopic real-time simulation of spiking neurons.
The V&A Digital Design Weekend is taking place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September.

Vase Forms paper ALIFE 2019

I was very pleased to present a paper about the ‘Morphogenetic Vase Forms’ at ALIFE 2019, the annual conference of the International Society for Artificial Life. The full paper is now online as an open access publication from MIT Press.

Making as Paradox

Finishing off a busy start to the Autumn, I’ve been invited to speak at ‘Making as Paradox’, a one day conference at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in October. Organized by researchers from the University of Sunderland and Northumbria University, the event focuses on how technology, including algorithmic generation of form and computational fabrication, is disrupting the made environment. The event takes place on Saturday 26th October.
