22 October: ODISSEI Community Conference

ODISSEI hereby invites you to the first ODISSEI Community Conference. This meeting will be held on Tuesday 22 October at Stadium Galgenwaard in Utrecht. During this event, ODISSEI will be presenting projects that used the ODISSEI Secure Supercomputer (OSSC), projects granted during the LISS call 2018, and those that received a Microdata Access Grant (MAG). Plans for the future will also be shared.

Grasp this opportunity to learn about the possibilities of ODISSEI, broaden your network and learn from each other.

Registration is free of charge (deadline 14 October).

Keynote – The future of ODISSEI

Last June, a financing application for further development of ODISSEI was submitted to NWO. In this keynote, ODISSEI will explain the four goals it proposed to work on:
  • Accessing, linking, and analysing sensitive data—that bridge different disciplines, analytical levels and time periods—in a safe, secure, and ethical manner (Data Facility)
  • Sustaining and optimising valuable, long-standing data collections (Observatory)
  • Opening up new avenues of inquiry by exploiting innovative digital technologies (Laboratory)
  • Acquiring skills and approaches for more complex and comprehensive modelling of social phenomena (Hub)

The ODISSEI Secure SuperComputer: First results

In the ODISSEI Secure Supercomputer (OSSC), researchers can analyse their data linked to CBS Microdata in SURFsara’s high performance computing environment Cartesius. After a successful Proof of Concept in 2018, Jan van der Laan (CBS), Eveline de Zeeuw (VU Amsterdam), and Ana Petrović (TU Delft) present their findings. What are their results and how did they like working in the OSSC environment?

Panel session – Open science

Open science has been a beautiful promise for several years. In the mean time, little seems to have changed. How does NWO stimulate open science? Which support is available to make this happen? And how is this related to the industries? Stan Gielen (directeur NWO), Erik Fledderus (director SURF) and Joep Verheggen (VP Global E-Operations Elsevier) will discuss these questions, led by Pearl Dykstra (scientific director ODISSEI).

LISS and Microdata projects

ODISSEI offers several discounts and calls to employees of its member organisations who use Microdata or the LISS panel. Katya Ivanova (UvA), Kim Stienstra (UU) and Perline Demange (VU) will explain their work with the Microdata Access Grant. Anouk Smeekes (UU) and Abu Aysolmaz (MU) will elaborate on their free time using the LISS panel.

Panel session – Future directions of social sciences

A revolution is going on in the social sciences. On the one hand, there is the rapidly increasing amount of data and the emergence of supercomputing. On the other hand, there are complex societal challenges like an ageing population, climate change and increasing social inequalities. How do the social sciences deal with these developments? Frank Takes (Leiden University), Chantal Kemner (Utrecht University) and Sophie de Broe (director CBS Centre for Big Data Statistics) will discuss about this.
