MIDTOWN PHILLIPS NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION WELCOMES BART BUCH! 

Midtown has contracted with Bart Buch to provide technical support to Midtown Phillips.  Many of you know Bart from his work at Heart of the Beast Theatre. We are thrilled to have his expertise continue in Midtown Phillips!

Bart will be coordinating Neighborhood Outreach Partnerships and be a point of contact for our partners.  He will be reviewing our Memorandums of Understanding, meeting with Partners, and helping us set up and post a 2020 Call for Outreach Partners.

Bart will also help us to get our Welcome to Midtown Phillips Signage installed at the Midtown Greenway Entrances/Exits to our neighborhood.

Additionally, he will be providing Tech Services for an ‘Art on Utility Box’ project.
MPNAI Boardmember Sunshine Sevigny will be leading this initiative.  If you are interested in helping please email Midtown Phillips.

FALL INTO HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Fall crisp air is right around the corner, which means we’re getting closer to heating season.  Whether your home needs a new furnace or boiler, water heater, or you want to add insulation— now is a great time to get moving on those projects! The Midtown Phillips neighborhood has partnered with the local nonprofit, Center for Energy and Environment to provide 0% financing for your home improvement projects. 

Through this partnership residents have access to loans up to $7,500. These loans have flexible terms, so monthly payments will be affordable. Most exterior, major mechanical, or energy home improvement projects are eligible. Additional financing programs are available to help with those larger projects.

FUNDING TO PREVENT OPIOID DEATHS 
Treatment for people involved with the justice system

The board accepted a $937,990 grant to provide medication-assisted therapy for people with opioid use disorder.

Treatment will be offered to people who are booked into the Adult Detention Center, sentenced to the Adult Corrections Facility and diverted to the Behavioral Health Center at 1800 Chicago Avenue.

Diagnosing opioid use disorder and beginning medical treatment while in custody could have positive outcomes for people, reducing the number of deaths and the traumatic and expensive overdose-hospitalization-jail cycle that usually precedes them. This is according to the findings of a study released earlier this year by Hennepin Healthcare and Hennepin County.

Hennepin County accepted additional state funding to expand access to Naloxone in the community.

Weekly walk-in hours will be increased to distribute Naloxone kits and clean syringes at the Red Door Clinic, which provides sexual health care. Additionally, staff will educate and distribute Naloxone kits to residents of Little Earth, a housing complex in Minneapolis serving the American Indian community.

Hennepin County is one of twelve National Institutes of Health (NIH) grantees for nationwide research on quality addiction treatment for opioid use disorder and misuse in criminal justice settings. The network of grantees will be called JCOIN, the Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network. Through the network, Hennepin is also part of an NIH-sponsored national innovation design team. Local partners in this work are Hennepin County Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR), Hennepin County Sheriff David Hutchinson and the Sheriff’s Office, and the Hennepin Healthcare System (HCMC and clinics).

HCSO and other law enforcement agencies will never contact individuals via phone or email to ask for any kind of payment. If individuals receive such a call, they are advised to NOT provide any personal information to the caller. Rather, they should record the caller’s number, save any voicemails that may have been left by the caller, and contact their local law enforcement agency.

Individuals should not rely on caller ID or recorded messages to verify the origin of a phone call. In some cases, phone scammers are able to use technology to appear as if they are calling from a legitimate law enforcement or government agency number. Scammers have also been known to create fraudulent recorded messages that identify their number as originating from law enforcement.

If you are uncertain about the identity of a caller, hang up the phone, locate the official phone number of the agency, and call the number directly.

MINNEAPOLIS PARKS & RECREATION UPDATE THEIR COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

Parks for All will engage Minneapolis residents and park users, along with MPRB staff and commissioners, over the next two years to shape the future direction of Minneapolis’ park and recreation system.

What is Parks for All?

The last MPRB Comprehensive Plan was approved in 2007 and set a vision through 2020. Parks for All is the next MPRB Comprehensive Plan, which will guide the Minneapolis park and recreation system for the next decade.

The MPRB Comprehensive Plan guides everything done by the MPRB. It articulates why the MPRB exists, identifies how the MPRB performs its work, and describes what the MPRB hopes to become.

Parks for All is separate from the recent City of Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan. It solely covers the Minneapolis park and recreation system. The plan will build off other recent MPRB plans including service area master plans for neighborhood parks, master plans for regional parks, RecQuest, the Urban Agriculture Activity Plan, the Skateboard Activity Plan, and other plans and policies that have been developed by MPRB in recent years with community input.

The Comprehensive Plan is as much process as product. Community engagement will be central to the development of the policy direction, but the process contains important opportunities to do community building around the park system.

Approximately $2 million will be available to assist with development costs through the county’s new Supportive Housing Strategy.

The RFQ will seek proposals from experienced supportive housing developers and teams (for example, partnerships between developers, service providers and/or property managers). Additional funding for services and building operations also may be available from the county.
