ABT Synod - Prayer Request
September 3, 2019

The following prayer request is being sent from the Synod office on behalf of Bishop Larry.
As siblings in Christ, we are called to pray for those facing challenges.

I have received the following e-mail correspondence and letter from Bishop Atahualpa of our Companion Church in Colombia and invite your prayers:

August 29, 2019 Colombian society received an announcement that increases our challenges to reach the peace that we all look forward (more information: Colombia ex-Farc rebel Iván Márquez issues call to arms

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation.”  Isaiah 52:7

The Lutheran Church of Colombia has historically accompanied the creation of peace in Colombia and, more specifically, the implementation of the "Final agreement for the termination of the internal conflict and the formation of stable and lasting peace" of 2016. Now due to the announcement made from a group of the FARC-EP (former Colombian guerrilla group)  once again take up arms, we appeal to the Christian communities, and especially to the sisters and brothers of the World Lutheran Communion, to continue working and praying for peace in Colombia.

We invite communities to keep up the hope for peace in our country and the international community to continue supporting the peace processes for the negotiated and non-violent resolution to the armed conflict in Colombia.

At the same time, we urge the government to preserve an attitude of dialog for the achievement of complete peace and insist on the full and unimpeded operation of the - Integral System of Truth, Justice, Reparation and Non-repetition.

From our faith, we reaffirm the commitment to the truth and justice, we clamour for the rights of victims and social leaders, and applaud the ex-combatants who have opted instead for the political army of civilian life.

We reject all forms of violence and in particular the rearmament of ex-combatants of the FARC-EP, we encourage them to reconsider the use of weapons and to instead, walk in the paths of peace that Jesus Christ embodied and announced in this world.

In Christ Jesus –
Shalom,
