LJ Martin joined the team at CCLS as the Coordinator of Outreach and Special Projects. . LJ comes to CCLS from time spent as an international librarian in Dubai, Munich, and the Bahamas. She has had the opportunity to work with a wide range of people from varying backgrounds. LJ is a Chautauqua County native and has knowledge of many of the communities that our members serve. She is working on reaching out to members and has already started setting up library visits.
National Voter Registration Day - September 24
The American Library Association (ALA), a Premier Partner of National Voter Registration Day, encourages libraries to sign up to observe the unofficial holiday on Tuesday, September 24, 2019. Libraries that sign up by Thursday, September 12, will receive a toolkit of free promotional materials such as posters and stickers, and opportunities for training.
National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan, unofficial holiday celebrated on the fourth Tuesday of September. Across the country, libraries provide voter registration forms and information about voting, as well as offer computers, which citizens can use to register to vote, update their voter registration, or research information about voting. National Voter Registration Day will provide participating libraries with a toolkit of activities they can use on Sept. 24.
The deadline to receive free resources for National Voter Registration Day 2019 is September 12, but libraries can register their participation in the event until Sept. 24.

The CCLS annual meeting will be held on Wednesday October 9 at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in Celoron. You will be receiving your invitation and registration form in your delivery. Workshops will be held at the Prendergast Library in the afternoon.

PLA is re-envisioning its annual survey of public libraries, the Public Library Data Service, and is interested in getting your input about public libraries’ data needs. PLA will hold two virtual town hall meetings to hear feedback from the public library field on how a new tool could better support your needs. Your input will be used to develop a new online tool that will help libraries use data better as well as assist PLA in advocating for public libraries nationally.

September 17 @ 10am: WNYLRC Training Center:Surveying and Assessing Endangered Media Formats and Old Tech Glow-Up
Do you have outdated formats in your archives, but no means to preserve them or even see what’s on them? Or maybe you don’t know what to do with the old technology hanging around the library?
Julia Novakovic, Hillary Ellis, and Andrew Borman of The Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, NY, will kick off the day with a presentation about assessing and surveying the unique endangered media formats in the Strong’s collection and digitized them. They will also demonstrate the use of floppy disk conversion equipment.
In the afternoon, Jay Barone, Branch Manager of the Isaías González-Soto Library, will present ideas of how to utilize the old tech – from monitors to cellphones – in your libraryto provide new resources for your patrons, improve accessibility, or make the library environment more fun! October 23 @ 9:15 am: Chautauqua Institution: Understanding Archives: An Introduction to Archival Basics
While proper archival procedures help ensure safe and effective management of collections, the individuals who care for collections also play a key role. However, volunteers, historians, and other professionals at collecting institutions may find themselves in the position of "archivist" without formal training in the profession. Topics covered during this workshop will include the fundamentals of archival appraisal, acquisition, and access; proper storage materials; and the most common preservation problems found within paper-based archival collections. This workshop will also touch briefly on processing, arrangement, and description.

During this 5-hour workshop, attendees will learn the fundamentals of copyright, explore the copyright laws specifically pertaining to libraries and archives, consider copyright issues related to streaming, digitization, ADA accommodations, and get practical tips for negotiating content licenses. Designed to be accessible and interactive, this workshop invites you submit your questions in advance, or bring them that day. Attendees will leave with worksheets and written materials to assist with managing day-to-day copyright concerns at their library.
