#3LV CAREER HACKS FOR HUMP DAY

September 4, 2019

"All of us need to understand the importance of branding.

We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc.

To be in business today, our most important job

is to be head marketer for the brand called You."

Tom Peters in Fast Company

Mujeres y Allies--Each time we present Rise to the Top! or a webinar on Executive Presence we talk about the key factors known to be linked to individuals seen as leaders or ready to be leaders:  Gravitas, Communication, and Appearance.  The Center for Talent Innovation report on this topic for multicultural professionals is a fantastic guide on what corporate leaders expect to see among rising super stars.  We also talk about your own personal brand of executive presence---how are you specifically demonstrate your executive presence in your daily interactions with others, on-line in social media, and with the different audiences you may have--co-workers, community members, or as part of your own side gig.  A personal brand is often best thought of as those few words people use to describe you when you are not in the room--she’s professional, determined and a great negotiator.  If you’re not sure how your personal brand comes across, ask your mentors and trusted colleagues.  This week’s #3LVCareerHacks is about asking for specific feedback on your personal brand in each of these important areas of executive presence.

Uno, dos, y tres. Let’s do this con ganas!

Tip #1 Gravitas--Bring the Energy That Says “You’ve Got This”

Your brand needs to convey that you have the ability to set a goal and get results.  This means there’s some degree of enthusiasm to what you are doing.  Look at both your body language and how you engage with others. Is there a bounce to your step as you walk in the door or do you plod in and sit down? Is there a firm handshake? Do you stand proud or are you slumped over? Do you convey a “can do” attitude or do you invite people to doubt your resolve?  Ask your mentor if they can give you examples of when you show this kind of energy in your work.  If they can’t come up with examples--make this a priority.

Tip #2  Communication--Say It with Confidence

Words matter. How you say them matters, too.  One of the ways to improve your professional brand is to expand your vocabulary so that you are engaging leaders with your knowledge using key business terminology.  Reading the latest business books or listening to business related podcasts will help.  Try also finding a “word a day app” to expand your vocabulary and find a local chapter of Toastmasters to join. Toastmasters chapters offer a fun and great way to network with other professionals while practicing your presentation skills. Ask your mentor if you communicate with the 4C’s: clear, concise, compelling and credible.

Tip #3 Appearance--Look the Part You Want to Play

There is such a range of clothing now in the workplace that it can be confusing to decide what to wear.  Formal business attire remains the norm in most financial, banking and consulting firms.  The tech sector remains the most casual. Two rules we always suggest--first, look at what your boss wears as a clue about what’s expected at the next level of leadership.  Second, don’t wear something that distracts people from your message. Even in a casual workplace, avoid showing off your curves or using elaborate jewelry.  If in doubt, make an appointment with a personal shopper (often for free) at large department stores.  Even if you don’t buy all the outfits that you try on--take pictures so that you remember the suggestions presented to you for later shopping. Ask your mentor if you are dressing for the next role you seek?

That’s it. #3LVCareerHacks on building your unique personal brand for executive presence.
