Climate change linked with kidney disease. View this email in your browser
Welcome back!

It was a week of excitement for the ICIJ team. The trailer for The Laundromat, Steven Soderbergh’s Panama Papers-inspired film, hit the internet… and then the film premiered on Sunday at the Venice Film Festival. You can watch the trailer here, but there’s a little more below too!

'FUN MOVIE, DIRTY BUSINESS'

It might be a comedy, but make no mistake that the outrageous financial skullduggery on display in The Laundromat is one of the most serious issues plaguing society, director Steven Soderbergh said at the premiere of the star-studded film. While Soderbergh called for tax haven reform, actress Meryl Streep paid tribute to the bravery of journalists risking their lives to expose corruption. We couldn't agree more!

CLIMATE CHANGE ILLNESS

Chronic kidney disease of undetermined causes (CKDu) is the second leading cause of death in Nicaragua and El Salvador. The mysterious kidney disease, which we first reported on in 2011, has now been linked with climate change. A new medical article says heat stress and dehydration are key factors in the spread of the disease. Intense heatwaves, associated with climate change, are putting workers at risk, according to the researchers.

OUR ‘HOT MESS’

Journalism, and journalists around the world have been having a bit of an existential crisis. How do we survive an industry that burns so many people out? How can we capture the attention of our readers – and make the public appreciate the importance of reporting to democracy? All in all, it’s a bit of a ‘hot mess.’ Our director Marina Walker Guevara is pretty hopeful about the future, despite the chaos. She’s got five ways we can seize the potential of our hot mess moment.

‘BRUTAL CONDITIONS’

Immigrants have been subjected to “horrific, inhumane, punitive, and unlawful conditions” in detention centers run by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to a new lawsuit. A dozen immigrants, plus two advocacy organizations argue ICE has violated healthcare and human rights, and has routinely used solitary confinement in place of providing adequate care for detainees with health issues.

Until next week!
