1.  Ghost town Orlando: Eerie photos show city's empty International Airport while Disney World closes and Trump's Mar-a-Lago mansion is boarded up as Hurricane Dorian churns past Florida

Terminals were left desolate at the state's largest airport, with departure boards showing all flights cancelled, as the deadly storm rumbled past.  Up to 800 journeys were already scheduled to be off across the US on Wednesday, with it expected to increase throughout the day as Hurricane Dorian moved away from the Bahamas where it has killed at least seven people.

2.  Does Disney Need Another Florida Theme Park?

The existence of Comcast's (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Universal Studios in Florida has pushed Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) to grow. You could argue that the creation of Islands of Adventure (IoA) -- Universal's second park or "gate" -- in 1999 pushed Disney to launch what is now called Disney's Hollywood Studios, and it's very clear that the Harry Potter-themed attractions at Universal led Disney to invest more heavily in its parks.

3.  Merlin Entertainments Acquisition By Motion Gets Shareholder Approval

Alliance News) - Merlin Entertainments PLC on Tuesday said its acquisition by Motion Acquisition Ltd has been approved by shareholders.  Motion Acquisition is a newly formed company created by joint offerers KIRKBI Invest AS - Lego's founding family - and funds advised by Blackstone Core Equity Advisors LLC and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

4.  SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa to announce new details on 2020 thrill rides next week

After postponing a press event last month, SeaWorld Orlando has now announced that they will be hosting duel press conferences with their sister park, Busch Gardens Tampa, on Sept. 12. The two press events, taking place at the exact same time, are confirmed to be focused on the parks' upcoming 2020 attractions. 

5.  Aging Infrastructure: Rebuild or Refresh

When deciding what to do with an aging International Street, the Kings Island executive team had to answer a question others in the industry routinely face: Do we tear it down and completely rebuild, or do we spend money to refurbish the existing area?  For Mike Koontz, the Mason, Ohio, park’s vice president and general manager, the answer was clear.
 

6.  Star Wars Land Is Proof Disney Has Lost Its Way

Last Thursday, the Walt Disney Company unveiled one of its largest and most promoted attractions ever. The new Star Wars Land, called Galaxy’s Edge, opened at its Hollywood Studios complex in Florida, coming on the heels of a similar Star Wars Land that opened at California’s Disneyland in May.

7.  Nightly drone light show coming to Silverwood amusement park next year

The “Light Up the Night” show, featuring more than 300 drones in various formations, will begin in June, coinciding with the opening of Boulder Beach. There will be three variations of the show – each with a separate theme – and plans also call for a patriotic-themed show on Independence Day.

8.  Woman files $3 million lawsuit alleging Space Mountain injury at Disneyland

An Alaska woman has sued the Walt Disney Co. seeking $3 million in California federal court, alleging she suffered a head injury while exiting the Space Mountain roller coaster at Disneyland.
 

9.  First look at Universal's Horror Nights Ghostbusters maze

"When we started doing this in 2006, we were primarily focused on slashes," Creative Director John Murdy said this afternoon as we toured the maze under construction on the New York streets of the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot. "We did Freddie, Jason, Leatherface, Michael Myers, and that's how we defined our brand.

10.  Six Flags' Coffin Challenge Is Back For 2019 Fright Fest

JACKSON, NJ — Forget pumpkin spice, the true harbinger of fall has arrived: Six Flags Great Adventure has announced the return of Fright Fest, and with it, the return of the 30-Hour Coffin Challenge.

11.  Cedar Point's daily operations are over for the year, HalloWeekends soon to start

SANDUSKY, Ohio — It's that time of year again when Cedar Point is getting ready for their annual HalloWeekends event.  Labor Day was the park's last day for daily operations and is closed for the rest week.

12.  'Laff in the Dark' event celebrates Crystal Beach memories

Like anyone who remembers Crystal Beach Amusement Park, the Canadian attraction holds a special place in the heart of local filmmaker Peter McGennis. So in 2018, McGennis began working on a rock opera about the “magical, ill-fated park” called “Laff in the Dark.”

13.  LET'S GO A mega attraction featuring Nickelodeon theme park, Legoland and DreamWorks water park is opening just outside of New York next month

A HUGE tourist attraction that features just about every sort of activity you can think of is set to open just outside of New York next month.  There will be a "mega mall" featuring 450 shops, a theme park and water park.  

14.  HalloScream returns to Kentucky Kingdom this October, and you can audition to be in it

It's almost the time for pumpkin everything, campfires and of course trying to scare your friends with outlandish costumes and realer-than-life gore.   You can do the latter at Kentucky Kingdom this fall and get paid in the process. 

15.  Valleyfair hiring 600 workers for ValleySCARE this fall

SHAKOPEE, Minn. — Valleyfair is planning to hire 600 additional seasonal workers as the amusement park prepares to host its annual ValleySCARE attractions for Halloween this fall.

16.  Bay Beach hours cut to weekends, final day of season set

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) — Bay Beach Amusement Park has announced its final hours for the 2019 season.

1.  Eiffel Tower tops Instagram charts after iconic landmark revealed as most tagged tourist attraction worldwide

The Eiffel Tower is the world's most popular attraction, according to Instagram, with the Paris attraction ranked as the social media platform's most tagged attraction. Ranking the most 'Instagram-worthy' tourist attractions, #eiffeltower was used 5,849,737 times, followed by #lasvegasstrip at 4,802,560 and #timessquare at 3,949,217. 

2.  One year on from major fire, National Museum of Brazil announces plans for reopening

One year on from a fire that almost completely destroyed the National Museum of Brazil, the institution has announced plans to reopen in 2022. The 200-year-old museum went up in flames last September after a faulty air conditioner started the blaze, which destroyed around half of the museum's collection. Thanks to extensive efforts from recovery crews, lost items such as the 12,000-year-old skull of Luzia – the oldest human remains ever found in the Americas – were successfully recovered. 

3.  Fortress Esports plans video gaming and esports venue in Melbourne

Fortress Esports has announced plans for the largest video gaming and esports entertainment venue in the Southern Hemisphere, heading to Emporium Melbourne.  Fortress Melbourne, set to open in early 2020, will span more than 2,700 square metres across two floors and will include a 200-seat purpose-built esports arena.

4.  Emaar Entertainment launching EKart Zabeel at Dubai Mall

Emaar Entertainment is soon launching the UAE’s first high-end electric e-karting experience at the Dubai Mall, amid a growing trend for retailtainment attractions.  EKart Zabeel will be a new indoor retailtainment experience at the Dubai Mall, joining the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, VR Park, Dubai Ice Rink and KidZania.

5.  LOOK: Gondolas have arrived; St Louis Wheel ready to open in October

The St. Louis Wheel has made even further progress as photos have shown the installment of several gondolas. St. Louis Wheel officials say about a dozen will be installed on Tuesday, and the rest will be finished by the end of the week.

6.  Callaway Is a Sheep in Jack Wolf’s Clothing, Thanks to Topgolf

Topgolf is making the sport accessible to new demographics and markets, thanks in part to Callaway Golf (NYSE:ELY), which has helped the new entertainment concept boost its market position. A closer look at Callaway shows a company with a confident outlook buoyed by a growing market.
 

7.  Dave & Busters in Concord Now Open

CONCORD, CA — Dave & Buster’s has officially opened its doors at shopping destination, The Veranda. As the companies 132nd location the restaurant and entertainment venue features 47,000 square-feet of excitement including a combination of top-of-the line games, a carefully crafted menu, premium drink options, and a state-of-the-art Sports Bar with dozens of oversized HDTVs for ideal game viewing. The new immersive environment is the newest go-to spot  for families, friends, and events.

8.  Sridevi's wax statue unveiled at Madame Tussauds in Singapore

Sridevi's iconic 'Hawa Hawai' avatar came alive at Madame Tussauds museum in Singapore on Wednesday with the launch of her wax statue. Complete with her golden gown and a golden crown, the wax statue captured her iconic look in the song ‘Hawa Hawai’ from the movie Mr India. 

9.  New exhibit featuring the Colts comes to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis

If you've ever wanted to dance alongside Blue, the Colts' mascot or check out a Super Bowl championship ring, you'll soon have your chance at the latest addition to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.  "First & Goal" is about all things football. The exhibit, created in partnership with the Indianapolis Colts, lets families celebrate one of America's favorite sports.

10.  Are African Artifacts Safer in Europe? Museum Conditions Revive Debate

That debate has been given new life in recent months after an investigation by the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper found that many of the artifacts that will be on display in the Humboldt Forum, a huge new museum under construction in a rebuilt Berlin palace, had for years been stored in less-than-ideal conditions. The report featured searing depictions of flooded storage rooms and depots choked with toxic dust.
Waterpark / Aquatics News

1.  It’s really happening: Developers break ground on Splash City Adventure Park in St. George

Project developers broke ground on Splash City Adventure Park Tuesday morning during an invite-only ceremony, signaling the official start to construction on St. George’s first large water park.

2.  Dothan City Commission budgets $2.7 million for Water World improvement

Water World serves as a getaway attraction for the Wiregrass and visitors when the heat is something you’re trying to beat.  Soon it will have a few upgrades as a three-flume water slide complex is coming to the water park.

3.  OMR15 Million Waterpark to Open in Oman Next Year

Tourists as well as those who live in Oman should pack their sunscreen and get ready to splash around in the new waterpark that is coming to Oman next year.  The Polin Group, a world renowned water parks brand, is making a grand entrance to the GCC next year, starting with their first project in Muscat.

4.  15-year-old Kansas in theme park wave-pool accident dies after being taken off life support

A 15-year-old Kansas boy has been taken off life support and died more than a week after he almost drowned at a water park.  Trey Wallace, who turned 15 four days after the accident, went to Oceans of Fun in Kansas City, Mo., with his church group on Aug. 24 when he “had an incident in the wave pool, causing him to go underwater,” according to a GoFundMe set up by his pastor, Kurt Coleman.

6.  Coral Reef Waterworld in Bracknell is closed because of a burst pipe

FAMILIES have been left feeling disappointed after a water park closed due to a burst water pipe.  Coral Reef Waterworld in Bracknell has closed today because of a pipe which burst over night.  Contractors are currently on the site working to fix the issue and the site is expected to be open tomorrow.

7.  Woman suffered an 8cm tear to her uterus whilst on water slide

A British mum-of-two was left with serious internal injuries to her uterus after using a water slide at the Aqualandia water park in Benidorm.  Her injures came as David Briffaut, 23, from Essex, was left with a broken neck at the same water park back in July after sliding head first down the Aquamania Splash ride. He could now be left with life changing injuries.
Aquarium / Zoo News

1.  Houston Zoo plans improvements, preps for 2022 centennial

On a muggy August morning, even some of the tropical animals at the Houston Zoo looked weary of summer, draping laconically over rocks or huddled in the shade.  The Houston Chronicle reports by this time next year, however, the zoo's three jaguars, along with its tapirs, anteaters, capybaras, rheas and macaws may feel slightly more at home. They will have new digs in immersive exhibits that mimic South America's Pantanal, their native habitat. A family of giant river otters and a giant anaconda coming from other zoos will join them.

2.  Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo celebrates history, last month at current location

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is celebrating its last month in its current location, and is asking you to help say goodbye with lower admission prices.  All you have to do is bring a canned good or item off the zoo’s Amazon wish list, which you can find on their Facebook page, to get half off admission starting today any weekday.

3.  End of an era as Chester Zoo's iconic monorail takes passengers for the final time

Chester Zoo's iconic monorail will take its last journey around the attraction today (Tuesday, September 3).  For the past 28 years, the Zoofari transportation system has carried millions of visitors around the zoo - giving them bird's eye views of the animals, habitats and gardens.  But after today, the monorail, which has transported famous visitors including Her Majesty the Queen, will no longer be in service to customers- and dismantling will begin next week.

4.  Free San Francisco Zoo admission on select September days

The San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is celebrating its 90th anniversary by throwing open the gates on Thursdays in September.  There will be free admission, plus happy hour entertainment, those days — but it’s being done on a county-by-county basis. Each adult must bring valid ID with address.

5.  NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores closing today ahead of Dorian

An aquarium here in the east will close today ahead of Hurricane Dorian.  The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores will close today due to expected impacts from the storm.  In a Facebook post, aquarium leaders said the safety of the animals, staff and visitors is a top priority.

6.  Lake Superior Zoo to announce new animals, construction of new habitats

Some new and exciting things are coming to the Lake Superior Zoo.  The zoo will be introducing the arrival of some new animals, along with the construction of new habitats.  A press conference will be held at the Zoo by the Old bear den exhibit on Wednesday September 4 at 11 a.m.

7.  Chester Zoo's hotel and restaurant plan gets the go-ahead

Chester Zoo is delighted after getting the go-ahead for plans to create an African savannah habitat overlooked by a large restaurant and overnight accommodation.  The project, named Grasslands, will be home to rare and endangered species including Rothschild’s giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, ostrich and antelope, all living alongside one another.

8.  Dinosaur lanterns at Edinburgh Zoo: 'Lost Worlds' festival will have hundreds of prehistoric creatures

Edinburgh Zoo will be reminiscent of Jurassic Park this winter, as its giant lanterns event comes back with a prehistoric theme.  The "Lost Worlds" lantern festival at the zoo will have hundreds of illuminated dinosaurs in trails around the park.  It will run for 47 nights between November 16 and January 26.

9.  Beardsley zoo farmyard closed during renovation

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is changing up its farmyard and hopes to have the first phase of renovations done in October.  In its newsletter unveiling the fall schedule, the zoo, 1875 Noble Ave., announced it was “transforming the Farmyard with new habitats for heritage farm breeds, a new children’s play area, and a larger Educational Amphitheatre for Zoo shows and school groups.”

10.  Otterly adorable! St. Louis Aquarium gets otters from Florida

It doesn’t get much cuter than this! The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station said it acquired otters from Flamingo Gardens in Florida. It shared on its Facebook that they traveled to Florida and brought home some furry friends.  St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station said it will share more of the otters’ journey on Thursday.
Tourism / Other News

1.  How Planet Hollywood is reinventing itself with luxury resorts in Orlando – and a lot of help from Guy Fieri

Orlando-based Planet Hollywood was at one time one of the most recognizable restaurant brands in the world, but by the time the Disney Springs flagship closed in Jan. 2016 for its $30 million remodel, many thought that it would never reopen. 

2.  Walt Disney Company announces $1 million donation for relief efforts in the Bahamas, home of two Disney resorts

The Walt Disney Company announced on Tuesday it plans to donate more than $1 million to emergency and recovery efforts in the Bahamas, following the devastating direct hit from Category 5 Hurricane Dorian on Sunday and through Tuesday. 

3.  How Orlando tourism, and gators, are weathering Hurricane Dorian

Hurricane Dorian was no match for Labor Day plans along the popular International Drive tourist corridor as business was brisk at two of Orlando's biggest attractions.

4.  Where are Korean tourists going for their holidays now they are shunning Japan?

An increasing number of South Korean tourists are choosing not to visit neighbouring Japan.  The move comes after relations between the two nations have been tested following disputes over Japan's export restrictions on South Korea and Seoul's move to end a military intelligence-sharing agreement with Tokyo.
