Gleanings from the JOFEE Network Gathering

This past weekend, several members of the Coastal Roots Farm team had the opportunity to attend the annual JOFEE Network Gathering, hosted this year in Northern California. Through story, song, ritual, learning, and celebration, our team joined with other organizations and professionals involved in the Jewish farming movement and addressed issues around climate change, inclusive culture-building, and power.

Jewish, Outdoor, Food, Farming and Environmental Education (JOFEE), is an initiative of Hazon, the Jewish lab for sustainability. Hazon is working towards building a movement that strengthens Jewish life and contributes to a more environmentally sustainable world for all. Along with 20 other organizations throughout the nation, we are a proud partner of Hazon within the JOFEE space. The organizations involved vary from small educational farms located at schools and synagogues to community farms that focus on Jewish engagement through the process of growing food. As a farm that produces nearly 40,000 pounds of produce each year and offers both Jewish and non-Jewish programming, we believe Coastal Roots Farm occupies a unique space within the network and is an important addition to the United States Jewish farming movement. We are now seeing a new generation of change-makers in this movement, including the launch of the Jewish Farmer Network, which is helping young farmers join the work force and become leaders in their community.

There was so much to glean from participating in this weekend's event - reigniting passion for working the land, action steps towards increased inclusivity, and revitalization through spiritual connection. We are excited to incorporate all we've learned into the work we are doing at Coastal Roots Farm and continue collaborating with the JOFEE network on innovative ways to integrate Jewish wisdom and traditions into environmental and outdoor education.

Great Outdoors Shabbat

Believe it or not, summer is coming to a close and our final Great Outdoors Shabbat is just a couple of days away. Celebrate the end of long days, warm weather, and outdoor picnics with us this Friday, September 6th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm!

As always, there will be kid-friendly activities, a Farm Tour, and music by Hillel Rubin. Make sure to bring a picnic blanket or lawn chairs and weather appropriate clothing.

Join Us In Our Sukkah Build

Join us as we prepare for our largest event of the year. We invite you to sign up and help us build our sukkahs on Sunday, October 6th.

A sukkah is the temporary structure erected during the holiday of Sukkot representing the huts Israelites lived in while wandering in the desert for 40 years after being freed from slavery. During the week-long celebration, some Jewish people eat, connect with community, and even sleep in the sukkah.

Please visit our website for more information about our upcoming Sukkot Harvest Festival on Sunday, October 20th.
