SEASONAL NOTES

FALL IS (ALMOST) IN THE AIR
Hints of Fall could be felt a few weeks ago, but that didn't last and it's hot again. Summer seems to be dragging out, with its final opportunities for a slow, reflective, restful pace, while the bustling energy of Fall pulls at us, whispering tales of cooler temperatures, yearning for new projects and community gatherings. As we prepare for this seasonal shift, what are you doing to close out the "summer hibernation" that we often joke about in the Deep South? How are you preparing for the coming Fall?
One way to prepare ourselves is by fortifying our physical selves to the degree that we can, to help us be present in our lives and communities. Elderberries, which have been ripening for a little while, can help to support our immunity. Goldenrod, which will soon be blooming, can support us during allergy attacks. We are grateful to our plant allies and for the seasonal shifts that allow us to realign ourselves with the world around us.

We also have very exciting news to share. We have secured additional space (right next door!) and will be offering classes again! We have a lot of plans & hopes for the space that will evolve over the coming months, but to get us started, we have a couple events already scheduled and we hope you can join us. See below for all the details!

Finally, we want to note that we are slowly but surely getting stocked back up after our annual summertime "return to the basics." We will have our staples and some fun new products in soon! If you're looking for something that has been out, stop by or call to confirm that it's in!

SHOP NEWS

Maypop is happy to announce that we have a new space!
Located at 2703 St. Claude Ave. (where our pals at St. Coffee were temporarily operating- we miss them and can't wait for them to reopen*), we are grateful for the opportunity to expand and extend more community offerings. The Fall Equinox is a beautiful time to ground into the Earth and come together around the care of ourselves and each other. We will be presenting classes with the herbalists here at Maypop, hosting amazing community teachers, and more. Below are some of the things that we have planned so far. Stay tuned for more to come soon!

*Speaking of St. Coffee, have you seen their fundraiser? They are expanding into a larger space (with food & a community flea market!) but could use some support. If you're able, consider lending a hand.

9/21: Native Plant Sale
Our pal, Lees, will be back selling native plants outside the shop on the Fall Equinox- Saturday, 9/21, from 12-4. Come see what's coming up at this time of year and bring some pollinator-friendly beauty to your yard! See the flyer below for full details.

9/24: Seasonal Vinegar with Keslie!

Vinegars are an age-old remedy for seasonal healing and preventative medicine. In the Fall, especially in the Deep South, where the warmth still lingers, we can add ingredients that are less spicy, yet still boosting to the immune system, have a fall spice flavor, help ward off coughs, colds & allergies, and help our bodies prepare for the harshness of the winter months. Join us for the Fall Equinox edition of our Seasonal Vinegar class to create a medicine infused not only with healing seasonal herbs, but also with the energy of the changing tides of the seasons to prepare yourself for what lies ahead! Email us to register.

10/3: Roots & Remedies Course in Elemental Herbalism by Rachael Reeves begins!

Rachael Reeves. through her business, Magnolia Botanicals, is super excited to offer this course again, which runs through Dec. 8th. She says, "it was so much fun last year and such a beautiful group of people! It was a wonderful journey of deepening relationships, connection and nurturing ourselves with Nature. Roots & Remedies will be starting right after the Fall Equinox, a great time to get a little Earth-centered and cultivate tools to take care of yourself and community!"
Contact Rachael at RReeves.Magnolia@gmail.com with questions. More details below with the flyer!

UPCOMING EVENTS
FIVE FLAVORS HERBAL COUGH SYRUP

This seasonal syrup incorporates the flavors of sour, bitter, pungent, salty and sweet. Use fresh or dried elderberries & stop by Maypop for your supplies! Check out the full recipe and article by Rosalee de la Foret on Learning Herbs for more details on working with the flavors of herbs.

Ingredients:
~ 1/2 cup dried elderberries (or one cup fresh)
~ 1/4 dried elecampane root
~ 1/4 cup dried plantain leaves (or 1/2 cup fresh)
~ 2 cups water
~ 1/2 cup honey

Directions:
~ Place herbs and water into a medium sized sauce pan. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, uncovered.
~ Strain off the herbs. You can use a cheesecloth to really squeeze the juice from the herbs. Wait for them to cool a bit before squeezing. You should end up with approximately 1/2 cup of liquid.
~ Return the liquid to a clean sauce pan. Add the honey and stir until well combined. If necessary, apply very low heat to warm the honey to allow it to incorporate.
~ Pour the mixture into a bottle, label and keep in the fridge for up to one month.
~ For children above the age of 2, use 1 teaspoon every hour as needed. (Children under the age of 2 should not have honey. Use an alternate sweetner for children under 2.)
~ Adults can use 1 tablespoon every 30-60 minutes as needed.
~Yields about 1 cup.
