Hello!

Our friends at Sheffield University asked us to spread the word about Hackcessible 2019.

The assistive technology Hackathon is returning once again to the amazing iForge Makerspace and they are planning for an even bigger and better event this year. With valuable support from the university, healthcare organisations and some industrial sponsors plus a fabulous team of volunteers helping to make this make-a-thon a pivotal annual assistive technology event for the region.

What is Hackcessible?

Hackcessible is a make-a-thon that brings together engineers, designers, computer scientists, students and others to collaborate with individuals with disabilities and create workable products that support their needs. Hackcessible also offers you an opportunity to gain valuable skills in making and fabrication, e.g in using 3D printers, laser cutters, design tools and in programming electronic devices.

Interested in submitting a challenge for Hackcessible 2019?

Are you, or anyone you know, interested in submitting a challenge for Hackcessible 2019? You will have the opportunity to work with some of the brightest budding engineers, designers, OTs, computer scientists and others with a passion for building technology for good. We're looking for all kinds of challenges and unmet needs. This could be anything from something you are currently unable to do, to an activity you would like to make easier, or even a passion or hobby that you are currently finding difficult to pursue. You don’t need to have any coding or other technical skills, just a willingness and availability to work closely with a team. Over the course of Hackcessible 2019, your team will try to develop a solution that addresses the need presented by you!

At last year’s Hackcessible, we saw teams write a program to scan sheet music for Vicky, a musician who has a visual impairment, create a device that refills a cup for Jamie, a Yorkshireman and father of two with cerebral palsy, as well as develop a wireless solution that allows Colin to control his iPhone from a head movement controlled switch on his wheelchair headrest.

Keen to participate?

If you’d like to know more about the event and wish to submit a challenge please go to the website and apply to take part as a co-designer.

Please spead the word and help us to make Hackcessible even better for 2019!

Thanks for reading!
