NZSA President - Call for Nominations 2019/2021 open


Nominations for the next President of NZ Society of Authors are open. 
The term of presidency will be from election through to the AGM in 2021. The term will be for 1 year and 9 months.

Strong governance by our President and National Board ensures that NZSA continues to be effective and relevant across the literary arts world, providing support to writers at all stages of their careers.    

Former President Siobhan Harvey (2017/2019) says: "The role of the President of the New Zealand Society of Authors allows you to advocate for and achieve real change within the New Zealand arts and literary sector. New Zealand has a diverse and vibrant writing community, and being an author is a role facing huge challenges in our age of disruptive technologies. Being at the cutting face of these challenges for writers and being part of working for better outcomes for authors are stimulating aspects of the President's role."
 
About the role of the President:
  • Term : Two years with a maximum of three consecutive terms.
  • Honorarium and expenses: $8,000 honorarium per annum and pre-approved travel expenses.
  • Nominations for National President shall be proposed and seconded and shall be confirmed in writing by the nominee. 
  • For nominations to be valid they are to be received by the Chief Executive by 20 September.
  • If only one person is nominated who meets the criteria then that writer will become president without the need for an election.

Key attributes needed:
  • Excellent communication skills
  • An understanding of governance
  • Ability to articulate NZSA aims and objectives 
  • Ability to collaborate with other literary arts organisations
  • Ability to strive for outcomes in the Strategic Plan and advise on policy
  • Ability to provide guidance and expert advice to the CEO
  • Chairing meetings of National Board meetings 
  • Ability to speak to the media advocating for, and raising the profile of writers  
  • Ability to lobby government and interact with industry organisations on behalf of writers
  • Knowledge of the NZ literary community and publishing environment
 
Experience that will help in the role:
  • Business or organisational experience
  • Board or governance experience
  • Public speaking and media experience
  • Political lobbying experience
