Thought of the Week

With thanks to Yudi New

In this week's reading, the Torah commands that when a king is coronated and “sits on his throne”, he must arrange for the words of Torah to be written on a scroll for him.

Commentators including the Minchas Chinuch and Ksav Sofer focus on the connection between the coronation and the Torah. When the king first sits on his throne, he is full of good intention and resolve to be just and adhere to the words of the Torah. Of course, as time passes so can the resolve. Hence, the Torah written in association with the coronation serves to remind him constantly of the excitement and opportunity which accompanied the beginning of his reign.

We are “a nation of kings” but also vulnerable to becoming creatures of habit. In order to refresh and retain our commitment, each of us must remind themselves of their individual coronation and beginning of their commitment to the Torah and relationship with G-d.

Wishing every one personal renewal as we proceed through Elul and towards Rosh Hashana.
