Welcome to the Streatham & Marlborough Sweep (SMS), a regular update of club news.

W1s and M4s Champions, M5s Promoted!

The Women’s 1s and Men’s 4s sealed their promotion as Champions whilst the Men's 5s were promoted in second place over the weekend. This follows the Hawk's Cup Win two weeks ago.

A great season for the club - four honours and no relegations - Well done everyone!

Senior Awards / Dinner and Dance - 26 October

Having asked the membership last week regarding the format of the Dinner & Dance, there's been a clear response to retain the formality of the event.

We will still be trying to reduce the cost where we can to ensure maximum value and attendance. I will update shortly regarding the proposed cost and how to buy tickets.

Thrilling tie for the 6s!

The Men’s 4s beat Reigate Priory to win the league by one point at the weekend. Following a nervy start with the bat, they found themselves three down with no many on the board. However, Stuart (49) was ably assisted by Corner (28) and Perkins (28) and extras (26) to set 170. All the SMCC bowlers bowled tightly to make the Reigate batters work for every run and ultimately they fell short by 21. A fantastic finish to a season in which thirteen from eighteen games were won, deserved Champions! The Men’s 5s had a slightly more comfortable victory as they posted 189-7 against Bexley Park, runs from Knapp (51*) and Southworth (42). Wickets were taken at regular intervals with Horlock (4-31) making the decisive impacts. Promotion, however, was out of their hands and they had to await results from elsewhere. News of which filtered through late on Saturday and the club celebrated both teams! A remarkable ascent through the table for a side that lost four of their first six games, they went on to win eight of the next nine completed games to finish the form team in the division.

The Women’s 1st XI were also confirmed as Champions on Sunday as Dulwich failed to win so the Women’s section can claim a League and Cup double in 2019. Undefeated in the league and just the solitary loss in an early cup round which was avenged in the final. An excellent year.

Elsewhere, Cheadle (104) played a lone hand with the bat for the 1s in a challenging chase following a maiden senior five wicket haul for Nicholls (6-54) and 4fer for skipper, Davis. Unfortunately, Cheadle was running out of partners and fell trying to clear the rope just fifteen runs short. His first hundred for the club, I’m sure we’ll see many more from this talented bat.

The 2s had a frustrating day with a last wicket, fifty run partnership allowing Egham to set 187. Three wickets apiece for Sharif, Ollie Khan and Date. They soon found themselves in trouble and only Rea (68) put up any real resistance. What could have been… The batting card for the 3s is remarkably similar if you exchange Rea for Flower, who made 69. Old Whitgiftians chasing down the total of 117, six down.

The 6s had the game of the weekend with a tie against Beckenham. I’ll let Laurie Johnston (5s/6s legend) pick up the action… “Past 7 of the clock on a September evening at the Bridge. Chasing 184 Streatham & Marlborough 6th XI were 167 for 7 after 39 overs. One over to come, 18 runs needed. At the crease, the heroic Neil Cook, partner in a magnificent 71 run stand with the mercurial Sundar Visnawathan (23). But Sundar was out now, perished in the 38th over trying to get his side over the line. Paul North had joined Cook and had helped him scramble 8 runs off the 39th over. 18 required. The young bowler Dylan Hoad had bowled beautifully (9-1-23-2) up to this point. Three singles off the first three balls. 15 from 3 balls. Then a wide followed by another. 13 from 3. North swats a 2. 11 from 2. The 5th ball is slightly short of length, slightly too straight. North picks it up off his hip for an almighty six over mid-wicket. 5 from 1 ball. Can he do it again? No but it is a wide that two extra are run from. 2 from 1 ball to win. North smashes the ball. They run one. North is run out trying to make the second. Scores level. The match is tied. The young bowler is inconsolable. Neil Cook 36 not out to add to his marvellous over the head catch at first slip and his 2 for 30 off 4 overs. Paul North finishes on 14 not out in addition to his 2 for 18 off 8 overs. 184 all. Another season done.” Quite.

Juniors Awards Day a big success!

Sunday hosted the End of Season Junior Awards, celebrating a hugely successful season where numbers rose 25% to exceed 250 boys and girls. There has been an incredible amount of work behind the scenes from Dan Forman, David Cook and a plethora of parents and coaches who have all contributed hugely.

In the hotly contested Mums & Dads vs Lads & Lasses game, it came down to the last over with the juniors falling just five runs short. An excellent afternoon to celebrate all the achievements of the section and fantastic to see so many boys and girls enjoying their cricket at the club.
