Dear Parents and carers,

Welcome back to a new school year. We had a lovely assembly this morning with our new school. Everyone, again, looked fantastic in their new uniform.

In assembly we discussed our school rules; be Safe, be ready and be respectful as we continue our learning journey. I added to 'our world' the value of making mistakes and that fail is a vital part of learning. As long as we don't make the same mistakes over again. This will be a theme over the first term as we build on our Super Learner values.

At the end of the year I had discussions with parents about what they could do to help their child as they move through nursery to the end of Year 6. To help we have tried to write down what a school might expect of parents and how that will help learners throughout their time at any school. The page is on the website. As we are starting off with a new year this is quite an appropriate excerpt:

STARTING SCHOOL...
TRANSITIONS AND DROP OFFS

At any age making a transition from one situation to another is difficult. Transitions are something that happens all day long at school and children get very good at managing them. Examples of transitions are; Leaving parents in the morning, moving from morning task to English work, moving from break-time to maths, going home at the end of the day etc.

It is normal for children to not want to make big transitions. Reception children often don't want to leave the safety of the parent at the start of school. Why would they! The parent provides the most safety. Everything else is strange. This is often true for older children as well. If your child doesn't cope well with transitions they possibly haven't had a lot of experience making them. Children who need support making morning drop off transitions need to get into a routine quickly. Parents need to model that school is a safe place to be and that they are happy to leave the child with a trusted adult. This is an act between the parent and trusted adult to build the child's confidence. Prolonging the transition by staying with the child often models the opposite, so a routine needs to be in place very quickly so the child can build their confidence over the first half term and onwards.

To remind you of the trips we have planned, mentioned in the newsletter before we broke for Summer. We plan to include the experiences in our teaching so it would be brilliant if you could support these residential visits. We understand that cost may be an issue, so please come in to discuss options for your family.

Year 2 - Shark Sleepover is around £70 at the start of June.
Year 3 - Go to the Pinkery for around £50 in March for 1 night.
Year 4 - Go to Bristol for 4 nights in March for around £270
Year 5 - Go to the Pinkery for 2 nights in March for around £100
Year 6 - Go to London in January for around £300 for 4 nights

There are also smaller trips planned by the teachers to support the learning through the year. We try to give you as much notice as possible for these events. To inform you that if we can't raise funds through voluntary contributions to within 10% of the trip cost we cannot proceed with the trip. The experiences and the learning that comes from these events is wonderful and I hope we can be a school that continues to build this into our curriculum.

Together with all the staff at CMPS we hope that you have a fantastic year of learning and enjoy working together with you child and school to achieve a fantastic foundation in learning.
