I want to give my constituents a quick update on proceedings in Parliament as we are at a crossroads in our politics.
Last night, I voted against Labour’s efforts to seize control of business from the Government. The reason for this was simple – to give Boris Johnson the strongest possible negotiating position when he goes to the European Council in mid-October.
By removing no deal from the table we are effectively hamstringing ourselves in these negotiations. Anyone who has ever been in business will tell you that you cannot take away your leverage.
In simple, taking no deal off the table means we won’t get a better deal from the EU.
Today, I shall vote against Labour’s Bill which will cause endless delays – perhaps the permanent cancellation of Brexit. It is a shameful document.
Section 3(2) of the Bill on today’s Order Paper, if passed, would compel the Prime Minister to accept whatever extension he is offered by the EU – be it 3 months or 10 years, with whatever conditions are attached by the EU, unless Parliament opts for a no deal Brexit.
To make matters worse – Corbyn’s Surrender Bill would cost the UK roughly £1 billion a month net in EU membership.
All these options would be in Brussels’ interest, not the British interest.
It is clear that only the Conservatives will respect the result of the referendum, end the uncertainty and then set out a solid platform on which to govern and deliver the people’s priorities such as increased education funding, boosting the NHS and tackling crime.
