Considering the Harvest

When we pick the first Honeycrisp apples, it feels like apple harvest has officially begun. And when the apple harvest has begun, there is a certain excitement in the air, a certain thankfulness, and a certain element of awe and wonder.

When I stop to consider the harvest, to consider all the things that had to go right in order for that tree to be sagging under the weight of its fruit – I am truly in awe of the hand of God in everyday life.

What had to go right? Well, dozens of things! The winter had to be just cold enough for the trees to go dormant, but not too cold so as to cause damage. We needed a warm spring, but a slow spring. One that would allow the tree to wake up gradually and at just the right time, ensuring the buds didn’t swell until after the last frost. We needed the bees and the breeze to show up in the few days that those blossoms were out, making sure that cross-pollination took place. We needed heat to swell those ‘baby apples’ into good size fruit – but not too much heat or the apples would get sunburn and the trees would be stressed and become weak. We needed rain but no hail. And just recently, we needed warm days and cool nights to transform the apple that was rosy pink into a royal red. We needed working equipment, healthy and committed staff, and of course fertile land to grow the trees. So many variables, so many miracles all had to take place and in perfect timing, and almost everything was completely out of our control!

Yes, the rows upon rows of trees laden with apples ripe and ready for the picking – it makes me stop, it makes me smile and it makes me consider all that God has done to give us these exciting, crazy, exhausting days of harvest.

Next time you crunch into a fresh, crisp and sweet apple from the tree – let it remind you too of all the simple, yet wonderful miracles of everyday life.
