🧀 Seattle’s hierarchy of needs

Crescent moon + orange sky = 😍. Thanks for using #theevergrey tag on Instagram, Rebecca!

What Seattle is talking about

CBD seems to be everywhere these days: Coffee shops, specialty supermarkets, even roadside antique stores. But is it legal?

KUOW tackled that question earlier this week as part of Bill Radke’s show, “The Record.” The short answer: It’s complicated.

For starters, it’s helpful to know the difference between hemp-derived CBD and marijuana. Both come from cannabis plants, but CBD has a much lower percentage of THC — the psychoactive ingredient that’s linked to marijuana’s stereotypical “trippy” effects.

Attorney Daniel Shortt told Radke that those differences mean CBD is regulated differently from marijuana. It actually falls under the purview of the FDA as an agricultural commodity, and it’s been approved as a drug treatment for epilepsy.

Because it can be used as a drug, the feds aren’t too keen on seeing CBD added to food and dietary supplements. (“If you go to a grocery store, you’d be surprised if you found a Tylenol-infused burrito,” Shortt explained.)

But non-consumables — like CBD lotions and oils — are different. Shortt said they’re not regulated as tightly as food, but that doesn’t mean the federal government has given them a ringing endorsement.

Meanwhile, Washington state has officially banned the sale of CBD-infused food and drink, outside of licensed pot shops, while it waits for new rules from the FDA.

In other news…

Is Shake Shack the ultimate tech-worker perk? The burger chain just announced it’s opening a second Washington location in a new Kirkland mixed-use development, where its neighbors will include Tableau and possibly Google. The Seattle Shake Shack outpost opened last fall in the heart of South Lake Union. (GeekWire)

Tree climbing isn’t just about speed; it’s about grace. And plenty of artful maneuvers were on display at Volunteer Park last weekend as a local chapter of professional arborists held a tree climbing competition. (Capitol Hill Seattle)

Talk about a very good boy. Niko the shiba inu spent a full month lost in the woods near Mount St. Helens before he was found by a pair of motorcyclists. He lost 30 pounds in the wilderness but is expected to make a full recovery. (The Columbian)
