Highlands Current Explores the Rise (and Challenges) of the
Gig Economy

Our fine local nonprofit newspaper The Highlands Current has a current series of articles called “Living on the Edge” that explores the economic challenges of living and working in the Highlands (Beacon, Philipstown, Cold Spring, etc.).

In the third piece in the series, “The Gig Economy,” Jeff Simms highlights some local challenges of freelancing, sharing the stories of two locals and also featuring BEAHIVE (and founder Scott Tillitt) as an innovator and resource for freelancers and the community.

“Whatever the reason and whatever you call it, the gig economy is growing rapidly, and will continue to do so over the next decade, according to projections,” he writes.

And in the sidebar titled “You Can’t Be Fired When You’re the Boss,” he adds, “Within the next decade, predicts Scott Tillitt, the founder of Beahive, half of all workers won’t have salaried jobs.”

Beacon Rates Rising Sept 16.
Join Now to Lock in Until Nov 1.

It's been more than 10 years since BEAHIVE opened as an experiment, a lab, a platform for engaging the community and bringing together interesting, talented folks to support each other.

Membership pays mostly for the space and the equipment and furnishings within.

But membership includes more than those things. There are some nice perks, but there's also considerable time and energy invested in making BEAHIVE a comfortable, inspiring, aesthetically pleasing space and engaging, supportive place.

Membership fees have always been relatively low, so we can be accessible as possible. But the rent of our Beacon flagship just increased significantly, so it has become a financial necessity to increase our Beacon rates, effective Sept. 16.

Join before Sept. 16 and lock in the current rates until Nov. 1...
an additional 1.5 months at the lower rate!

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR WORK.
We [Historical Research Associates] specialize in historic research and writing for environmental and tribal litigation, interpretive exhibits, administrative histories, and historic content development for public relations firms.

As historians, we are skilled at going through lots of information quickly and making sense of it. It’s sort of a combination of detective work and data processing, where the data is old, hard to find, and maybe handwritten.

Beacon member Gavin Wassung, through his design strategy consultancy Person, recently helped Design Gym design and facilitate a 5-day Google sprint with Henkel, a German chemical and consumer goods company.

Google's design sprint is a process for answering "critical business questions through design, prototyping, and testing ideas with customers."

Design Gym is a "creative agency that empowers people inside of organizations to break things, make things, and create dramatically better ways to work."

BEAHIVE founder Scott Tillitt was one of the inaugural interviews for Creative Hudson Valley, "a celebration of the Hudson Valley's incredible creative energy and the people who choose to live and work here."

The interviews follow a formula Q&A format and explore not only the person's work but how they spend their day, how the Hudson Valley feeds their creativity, favorite things about the region, and the like.

The site just launched and already there's a treasure trove of inspiration from some really interesting folks.
