A bountiful fall harvest
The veggie garden is swinging into full harvest time and our pumpkins are turning orange. During this period of time – while they are still small enough, we gently rotate them to right side up, keeping them firmly attached to their vine and placing them on boards so that they don’t rot where they come into contact with the soil. We are trying a new variety this year called White Boer, a popular squash in South Africa. It came on late, but we think it will produce a nice harvest before the end of the year.

Seed saving is happening, many enthusiastic seed savers have been diligently watching and harvesting as the seed are ripening and we stock our shelves for next year’s garden. Some of the saved seeds include Merlot Lettuce, Violet Queen Cauliflower, Sugar Snap Peas, Calendula, Nigella, and many others. Vegetable seeds will be donated to the Victory Gardens for Peace Seed Bank, and available for free to the Mendocino Coast community.

Where does our harvest go?

Twice a week, volunteers and MCBG staff harvest the garden's bounty. A portion of the fresh-picked produce and edible flowers are used for salads, sandwiches, and specials at Rhody's Garden Cafe.
The rest is delivered to the Fort Bragg Food Bank. We were able to donate more than 2,000 pounds of fresh produce in 2013. A major expansion of our Vegetable Garden allowed us to increase our output donating 6,274 pounds to the Food Bank in 2014, 7,116 pounds in 2015, and 5,620 in 2016, 6,115 in 2017, and 6,469 last year! In 2019 we have already washed and delivered 3,579 pounds (as of the end of August)!

Bodacious begonias
This past winter one of our talented volunteers helped improve flow through the Mae E. Lauer Display House by carving out an opening into the Heritage Rose Garden and restructuring the rows allowing you to wind through the blossoms. At the moment, the airy improvements are doing a fantastic job of showcasing our Begonia Collection and a portion of our Fuchsia Collection. A late summer treat for hummingbirds and humans!
News from the Nursery
If you are looking for something showy for your garden this fall, stop by the Nursery at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and pick up a Princess Flower (also called Glory Bush), Tibouchina. With their fuzzy evergreen foliage, reddish buds and large, bold flowers, they add a dramatic burst of color to the garden from late summer until frost.
The Nursery has Princes Flower in the traditional pure purple – Tibouchina urvilleana (pictured above), and also the less common, Tibouchina organensis ‘Blue Moon’ (pictured right) which has soft lavender flowers with a blue hue. Both plants do well in sun or bright shade (part shade to bright shade if you’re inland), and regular water.
Here on the coast Tibouchina urvilleana can be seen growing happily throughout Fort Bragg and even on properties adjacent to the ocean where there is protection from the north winds. Hardy to about 27°F. The Nursery at MCBG has both available in 5-gallon pots.

Coming soon... Our Rhododendrons and Conifers will arrive this fall so keep an eye on our Facebook page!

Another great summer fundraiser!

This year’s Art in the Gardens featured more than 60 amazing artists, talented local musical acts, local culinary delights, and some of Northern California’s best wineries and craft brews. Everyone enjoyed the sunshine, dahlias, and surprisingly warm coastal weather.
