MAIN OFFICE INTRODUCTIONS
PRINCIPAL DENO & ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL DIXON
DR. ALLISON DENO
I am excited to be back at Lawton this year. I love the elementary years when it's so easy to engage students’ innate curiosity to make them dedicated learners. I'm passionate about offering school experiences that include academic rigor, exposure to the arts and movement, and those that support their social emotional development. My husband and I have three children—23, 17 and 15. I’m spending a lot of time looking at college applications and water polo games these days. I love to read and hike and I still cheer for my Minnesota Gophers. andeno@seattleschools.org

BARBARA DIXON
I am excited to be back at Lawton this year. I’ve been working for Seattle Public Schools for the past 20 years and have been an educator for 38. I started right out of high school as an Instructional Assistant for special education and Title I students in my hometown in eastern Oregon. It was that experience, in addition to having my own children, that made me realize I wanted to be an educator. My husband and I have raised six children who are now giving us the cutest grandkids you’ve ever seen! I love reading, poetry, quilting, swimming, the great outdoors, and spending time with my family. bbdixon@seattleschools.org
MS. GODON & MS. CERISE
ANNETTE GODON
Welcome to Lawton! My name is Annette Godon. It has been my pleasure to work in the Lawton office for the past eight years. I have enjoyed watching your children experience “the big school” for the first time and grow year after year into confident learners with a strong sense of community and self-worth. I’ve lived in Magnolia for 19 years and enjoy running into students and families in the neighborhood. My husband, Demian and I have two children in college and a cat named Buddy who thinks he’s a dog. I love to dance and play tennis. Next time you are in the building please drop by for a visit! algodon@seattleschools.org

KRISTINA CERISE
My name is Kristina Cerise and I’m excited to be back at Lawton for my second year. Coffee, books, and hiking trails make me happy. I have a 7th grade son, 5th grade daughter, and am married to the kindest man on the planet. I visit the Ballard library more often than the grocery store, check flight prices to London when I have a craving for paprika crisps, and get a genuine thrill out of a well-designed spreadsheet. kmcerise@seattleschools.org

BACK TO SCHOOL BASH: THIS FRIDAY!
Volunteer Sign-Up
Thank you to the many 1st grade families who volunteered to help for this week's annual Back to School Bash. We still have quite a few activity slots to fill, so we are opening up the volunteer sign-up to all grade levels. If you have middle school or high school children who would like to volunteer, they are also welcome to do so. Thank you in advance for making this event such a success!
INTERESTED IN JOINING A COMMITTEE?
The PTA relies on volunteer committees to run the many sponsored academic and social events throughout the year. If you are looking to be more active at school, please stop by the Volunteer Table at the Back to School Bash to sign up for open committee positions.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS (ASP): FALL 2019
The lottery registration will be...
from September 16th at 9:00 am – September 20th at 9:00 pm
PLEASE READ THROUGH ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS...
  • Classes will start the week of October 7, 2019 and run through February 7, 2020
  • Each family will need to return to (or create) their account at www.6crickets.com to register for classes.
  • Add your child to the waitlist of the classes they are interested in taking.  This will enter them into the lottery. **Please note – do not add your child to the waitlist for more than one class on any given day. Adding them to multiple classes on a day will result in child being removed from the lottery process.
  • You will be notified by email from 6crickets no later than September 22, 2019 at 8:00 pm as to which classes your child can enroll in. Each class will generate a separate email notification; please allow until 8:00 pm to receive emails.
  • Complete payment for classes “won” in the lottery will be due by September 25, 2019 at midnight. If you do not pay the balance by this deadline your child’s spot will be released. See below for financial assistance information.
  • Second-Chance registration will be open from September 27, 2019 at 9:00 am – October 2, 2019 at 9:00 pm (for classes not filled through the lottery process). Second-Chance registration is conducted as first-come, first-served. Payment must be made at the time of registration.
Families needing financial support should contact afterschoolprograms@lawtonelementary.org.

The PTA offers a limited amount of scholarships and can offer financial assistance to families requesting full tuition for one class only. Families wishing to take more than one class on financial assistance will have to make arrangements directly with course instructors.

Please direct all questions to afterschoolprograms@lawtonelementary.org.

We do our best to ensure all students who want to take a class will be able to do so.
NEW AFTER SCHOOL (ASP) CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Mondays are for Mindful Monkeys: Kids Yoga
Hi Lawton parents! My name is Joely Johnson, and I am a certified kids yoga instructor with years of experience (I'm also a Lawton mom of a fourth grader). I wanted to let you know that I'll be offering a fun after school enrichment class -- Kids Yoga: Mindful Monkeys -- on Mondays at Lawton this year! The Mindful Monkeys yoga class is open to grades K-5 and is for kids of all abilities.

Yoga for kids is very different than adult yoga -- we play lots of games, use plenty of fun props (stuffies, puppets, rubber bands, scarves, and even jelly beans), and sneak in healthy doses of mindfulness development and social-emotional learning. Every class ends with a little time for relaxation as well, so kids can grow their ability to calm themselves and enjoy stillness.

I am a certified yoga instructor and yoga therapist, and I have been teaching private and group classes for 20 years. In 2010, I earned a special certification to teach children through Karma Kids Yoga. I truly love introducing young people to all that yoga has to offer, and I hope you will consider signing your child up for Mindful Monkeys this fall! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. My website is: www.seattlemindfulmonkeysyoga.com
Zumba Kids - let's Dance!
Zumba Kids with Venessa Mackie is a place where kids can be active and JAM out to music from around the world and the latest hits. We use kid friendly routines, break down the dance steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration into the class structure. Zumba Kids help develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporate fitness as a natural part of children's lives by making fitness fun. Come and Join the Dance Party!
PE BIKE UNIT: 3RD - 5TH GRADERS
Lawton is so lucky to receive the bike fleet first this year! Grades 3-5 will be participating in the biking unit beginning Thursday, September 19th and ending Friday, October 4th.

If your child owns a helmet, please label the helmet with their full name and room number, and send it with them to school. Helmets and hairnets will be provided for students who do not bring helmets. Students may NOT bring their own bikes for this unit.

Parent volunteers are greatly needed during this unit, so please contact Ms. Volk to help! If She will be happy to coordinate with you based on availability and your child(ren)/s PE schedule.
ADVOCACY

Seattle Public Schools has a new five-year strategic plan, called “Seattle Excellence.”

In the words of Denise Juneau, our SPS superintendent, the plan “is unapologetically focused on students of color, those furthest away from educational justice. This doesn’t mean great work won’t continue for all students. What it does mean is that educators will be mindful and intentional about creating the right learning conditions for students that we are underserving, beginning with African American boys and young males.”

This year, our schools will be focused on the following three goals: 3rd grade reading, building a culturally responsive workforce, and creating safe, welcoming learning environments for our students and their families.

As your Advocacy Representative on our PTA board, it’s my job to communicate what these broader goals mean for our wonderful Lawton community. In the meantime, if you have any questions about issues happening at the district level, please don’t hesitate to ask. And you can always seek out the latest district news at:

PROGRAM FOR 4TH GRADERS
Did you know that the Every Kid Outdoor Program provides 4th grade students with free entrance to public lands? See the following details from our friends at the Seattle Area National Park Sites:

If you are a fourth grader (including home-schooled and free-choice learners 10 years of age) you get unlimited, free access for you and your family to any federal lands or waters through August 31, 2020.

In the Seattle area, the Interagency Fourth Grade Pass covers the $30 entrance fee at Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks, the $5 trailhead parking fee at Mount Baker-Snoqualmie and Olympic national forests, the $3 parking fee at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, the $10 youth admission fee to the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, and more!

To obtain the free pass, fourth grade students can visit nps.gov/everykidoutdoors, participate in a short educational activity, and download a voucher. The voucher is valid for multiple use between September 1, 2019 and August 31, 2020 and may be exchanged for a plastic keepsake pass at participating federal lands.

The Every Kid Outdoors Program was established by Congress in 2019. It replaces the Every Kid in a Park Program which was launched in 2015. It is an interagency collaboration between the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Forest Service.

LAWTON SPIRIT DAYS
During the school year, the first Friday of the month is designated as a School Spirit Day. When you get the chance to look over your Lawton Elementary Family Calendar from your First Day Packets, you'll see the first School Spirit Day is Friday, October 4th. Students and teachers are encouraged to wear anything tie-dyed.

If your child likes to participate in school spirit events, take a look at the calendar now so you're not caught off-guard when your child asks where their rainbow socks are. We will list every School Spirit Day in the calendar section of the newsletter in case you need reminders.
