Flagler College monitors Hurricane Dorian as it passes the area

Wednesday, Sept. 4, 4 p.m.

Flagler College is continuing to monitor Hurricane Dorian as it passes the area. The warning for the tropical storm has been removed for St. Augustine. The evacuation order for Evacuation Zones A and B has also been lifted. The College remains closed, including all residence halls, and classes canceled through at least Thursday, Sept. 5 to allow campus officials time to assess the impacts to the campus. Students, faculty and staff are not permitted to return to campus until the College has reopened.

We know that everyone is anxious to return to campus and to have an announcement on that timing. While it appears that the bulk of the storm has passed, there are two things that impact our decision to reopen campus and return to classes.

  1. An “all clear” assessment of our campus.
  2. A safe travel day for students to return and move back in.

The Emergency Operations Team at Flagler College will meet tomorrow to begin assessing the impact of Hurricane Dorian on the campus. We will continue to monitor the status of the evacuation order and the conditions of the roads for travel.

The reopening of campus and the return to classes may be two different dates to allow time for safe travel back to campus. The College will provide an update on the status of campus and classes tomorrow.

What you need to know:

  • Campus remains closed and classes canceled through Thursday, Sept. 5.

  • The evacuation order for Evacuation Zones A and B has been lifted.

  • Campus officials will begin assessing the impacts of Dorian to the campus tomorrow.

  • You will receive a notification tomorrow to update you on plans to reopen campus and return to classes.

  • We understand changes in reopening the campus may complicate efforts to return. Any class absences due to the storm will be counted as excused absences, and these absences will not be counted against your overall class attendance.
