Snapdragon
latin: Antirrhinum majus
Native to rocky areas of Europe, USA, and North Africa
The snapdragon is one of my favorite flowers. It might be the unique petal that opens up like a mouth, or its fantastically bright color. Whatever it is, I love it. There is a little bit of drama surrounding the snapdragon in the plant world. The USDA only recognizes two species of the Antirrhinum whereas the plant list recognizes 21. There used to be 36 species placed in three genus but genetic testing has created uncertainty leading to the current debate. Many of those 36 species have been deduced to be Sairocarpus. The debate continues to this day. Who knew? NEAT!
