From Zero to Hero
After 6 years of mourning the death of my 12 year old Labrador Jessie, I finally called on all my courage to adopt a new baby.
“I will never have a male dog” I said
“Their habits are definitely not for me...” I said
That was until I saw that face… It was love at first sight. We were inseparable – best friends. It sure is true that a dog chooses you.
After numerous failed attempts at naming him, my husband suggested the name “Bruno”. It was perfect! He was unstoppable, loyal, playful… he loved learning but was naughty as hell! With a face like that though, how could I be mad? A few days later, my husband confessed that his “creative name” was actually the brand of his hunting rifle. We could only laugh.
One day, I noticed a strange wound like mark on his tail. It got bigger and bigger. I also noticed that his skin got darker all over and his hair stopped growing. He got lazy, was not as playful and became more and more lethargic over time. It was as if he was ready to go to sleep and never wake up.
Nothing that was suggested as treatment for his hairless patch seemed to have any effect. Upon high recommendation from a friend – I took Bruno to see Dr Gerna. She immediately suspected the problem, but did however run blood tests to confirm her suspicion.
He was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid gland. This really came as a surprise to me…I mean really!! There I thought only humans are prone to that.
She prescribed medication and told me that he would have to use it for the rest of his life. The transformation after 5 months was amazing! I have a brand new dog! He is so energetic, he is playful, he eats better, and he looks and acts five years younger!
I will never regret the day I took Bruno to Dr Gerna. She gave me back my best friend. He is such a happy and playful dog.
I love him to bits! I am so thankful that he is feeling like his old self again.
