It's That Time of Year: Back To School
After a long summer full of summer camps and fun in the sun, we understand that going back to school can be nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time, especially for a child with epilepsy.
Our Educational Programs are meant to help ease the school experience for the child and family living with epilepsy. Susan Welby, our Director of Community Education & Engagement, has a message about our Educational Programs.
"Providing accurate information about epilepsy and seizures to school personnel is key to helping people understand the spectrum of epilepsy. Sharing knowledge that seizures have multiple types, symptoms, frequency and recovery times for each student with the diagnosis is a key component. Teaching appropriate first aid response and sharing the impact epilepsy and seizures have on the student’s social wellbeing and ability to learn brings an understanding of the impact epilepsy may have on a student’s school day. Most of all, it is imperative to tell them it is ok to place few if any restrictions on the student living with epilepsy to allow them to achieve their potential. Giving school staff resources is a big part of the training: seizure action plans, seizure observation records & description sheets are a few of these tools. There is so much misunderstanding and outright misinformation about epilepsy. These trainings shed a bit of light and accuracy on the condition and it is hoped that teachers, specialists, paraprofessionals and all who come in contact with the student with epilepsy gain some insight into this complex neurological disease."
"I 💜 that the school district had the Epilepsy Foundation there today to make people aware of the signs and symptoms of different types of seizures. 💜💜"
