For the last two months the Faith in Action Committee has been leading us in pursuing peace through the Nonviolent Wilmington project. In short, it is a grass-roots effort to mobilize people and organizations who are dedicated to nonviolence to commit themselves to living, speaking, and acting peacefully. The committee has offered two Minutes for Mission in worship, and are present in fellowship time with more information, including commitment forms.
The culmination will be on Sunday, September 29. At 3:00 p.m. the 4th Annual March for a Culture of Peace will depart from Hicks-Anderson Community Center (5th and Madison St.). It will end at the Quaker Meeting House (4th and West St.), where at 4:00 p.m. there will be a short program with speakers during which time people may make their commitments to nonviolence. If you are not able to participate in the March, please come to the Meeting House at 4:00 p.m.
If you have any questions, or would like to make your commitment, please see a member of the Faith in Action Committee or me.
May God bless and all of our efforts to create a nonviolent city - and world.
Peace,
Andy

Hanover’s Discipleship Team is excited to announce that ALL classes on Sunday morning and the Adult Bible Study on Wednesday evenings will be studying the Ten Commandments. Using the Horizons Bible Study, Love Carved in Stone: A Fresh Look at the Ten Commandments, we will be exploring the biblical context of the Ten Commandments as well as drawing fresh insights for our time. Did you know that the Hebrew word for “commandment" does not appear in the text—they are referred to as “Words.” Perhaps this designation alone may help us look for fresh insights from them! What would it mean to consider the Ten Commandments not as a harsh list of what not to do but, instead, as a “love letter” from a loving God?
Some of the questions that the adults and older youth will be exploring during this study include:
In a time of increasing relativism, what do these Words say to me about how to be a moral Christian, both in personal and communal life?
How do I live out these Words in my relationship with God and with others in a word that is often ruled by other standards?
What is the pain from which God seeks to protect me in these Words, and how might that protection manifest itself in my life?
How can a fresh embrace of this Word contribute to my restoration, the restoration of my community, and of the gospel in the world?

2019 Female Harmony Society Tea
Saturday, October 12, 3:00-5:00 pm
Location: Hanover Presbyterian Church
Guest Speaker: Dr. Velma Scantlebury
Before every organ transplant Dr. Velma Scantlebury takes a quiet moment by the surgical sink, praying for God's guidance. "Help me to do the best I can. My hands are your hands," is the prayer, says Scantlebury, the first female African-American transplant surgeon in the United States.
This year we are honoring the memory of Pat Undercuffler and raising funds to support the educational mission of the Female Harmony Society in her name.
Please join us as we celebrate the traditions of fellowship, educational leadership and prayerfulness. The Female Harmony Society Tea is a delightful afternoon where families are welcome to enjoy each others' company, and guests are always welcome.
Tickets are $10 each and available on the website below, by sending a check into the Female Harmony Society via Hanover’s address or by contacting Cheryl Heiks, President (563-3273).

Faith in Actions' Peace Tips
From now through the first Sunday in October, we are temporarily replacing Creation Care tips with Peace Tips. Hanover will be joining many other congregations to participate in Nonviolent Wilmington. Here are some ideas and tips about peace:
Peace in your Neighborhood
If you are unable to attend the Neighborhood Association meetings, or they are always arguing, try volunteering on a project, such as a fall clean-up or a holiday barbecue. That way you can meet more neighbors on neutral ground, while all of you are improving the place you all live.

OUR FOOD PANTRY NEEDS
The Food Pantry here at Hanover is a vital part of our community, as it feeds between 40 and 50 local families each week. We are running low on supplies and would love to have your food and/or monetary donations. They can always use dry pasta, sauces, beans, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, etc. If you want to give a monetary donation, please make sure that your check or envelope is clearly marked for "Food Pantry". We appreciate your generosity.
