miss me?

Summer is winding down (more on my very strange summer below), but you still have an opportunity to visit Pignic Central on Facebook to find information on available Pignics and events near you!
I attended the Boston June Pignic, which was such a treat since I don't get much in-person pig cuddling since moving to the D.C. area in 2013. I'm still planning to start a pignic somewhere between Richmond, VA and Raleigh, NC...  for now, though, check out Sally's blog post about the June Pignic! So much cute. :)

And speaking of cute...
The posted deadline for calendar photo submissions is tomorrow, 6 September. Well, that hardly seems fair, given that I missed sending out a newsletter last month, so I'm extending the deadline! Please submit photos by 15 September.  Check out the submission guidelines at CavyMadness.com, and you'll see how to send a photo for the 2020 Pet Piggies on Parade calendar.  And all the piggies featured in the 2020 calendar will have a FREE calendar sent to them, so make sure to read the guidelines thoroughly, since I need a mailing address!

still working on a new site.

CavyMadness.com is still at the old platform, because I've run into some e-commerce issues. Well, some scheduling and time and personal family issues, too, but mainly setting up the shop.
Soooooo, I have updated the Shop page with all the new cozy designs, and there are still plenty of Normans waiting to be "adopted." And speaking of adoptions, check out some adorable adoptable piggies at MSPCA Nevins Farm - many still need homes!

quite a summer.

June and July were a topsy-turvy two months, with so many changes and challenges! On 1 June, my partner of over 5 years (we met in January 2014, exactly one year after I moved to Alexandria, VA) took me to a fabulous little French restaurant, and asked me to marry him! So I'm engaged, and we're still trying to figure out what we want to do for a wedding. January 2020 was the first target, until things got a bit too frenetic. But we're having fun talking about ideas, so whatever we do, it will be wonderful!

After the engagement, we traveled to Boston to attend the Spring Pignic and visit a few friends. It was so lovely to hang out in the park with so many piggies again! I'm also glad that I was able to see a couple friends who were moving in July - those were some big surprises!

Our cat, The Possum, escaped for 36 very stressful hours the weekend of 15 June. It was a terrible experience, but thanks to a pet tracker (yes, you can find your pet through the amazing tracking talent of a search-and-rescue veteran and her golden retrievers!), Possum returned quickly once he was located and we left a scent trail back home. The Possum is an elderkitty with some health issues, and he's currently being treated for a herniated disc and infection that has caused a lot of weakness in his hind legs. It's heartbreaking to see a cat not fully be able to be a cat; Possum cannot really jump, nor scamper. But we're hoping he improves soon.

Now for the icing on the cake: my partner's (fiance's!) appendix burst in late June, which led to a week in the hospital after emergency surgery. There were a few complications that made this quite an ordeal, but he's doing better now. And after almost two years of worsening leg pain and swelling, I finally met a vascular surgeon who identified and is treating my "venous insufficiency" (veins that aren't functioning properly). And I'm also being treated for lymphedema. This was unexpected and frustrating! But it's wonderful to finally have some sort of momentum on helping my legs get some relief from awful cramps and pain.

As you can imagine, this summer has been very busy and stressful! But right now, our thoughts are with those affected by Hurricane Dorian. We are still anticipating major damage along the southeastern United States; hurricanes are quite unpredictable until they are on top of us. I am always inspired by the resiliency of those who live in disaster-prone areas, but I'm also saddened by the apathy toward long-term dedication and planning to slow the destruction wrought by climate change. These storms and fires are going to keep coming; please take "think globally, act locally" to heart and do what you can in your own community to promote sustainable practices.
take care, everyone. I'll be back soon!
