SHASTA LAND TRUST

GETTING OUT ON THE LAND!

Over the span of six days, Land Trust staff surveyed over 20,000 acres of conserved land in Shasta County. Annual monitoring allows us to see changes to a property over time and make sure the land is being used responsibly. Some areas were monitored on foot, while other, more rugged and expansive places, were observed in an off-road vehicle.

Taking the time to observe and track changes to different properties is one of the most important things we do here at the Land Trust. This consistent observation is vital to fulfilling our goal of long-term and sustainable conservation of these significant lands in Shasta County.

For more on monitoring, please check out our blog post on our website. www.shastalandtrust.org/blog/2019/10/7/the-importance-of-monitoring

A DAY WITH SPRING RIVERS FOUNDATION

Recently, Shasta Land Trust employees spent a day in the classroom with Spring Rivers Foundation. Spring Rivers Outdoor Education Program educates local children about the outside world in Shasta County. We were able to assist in an educational day at Fall River Elementary School where the children made leaf print crafts, wrote nature poetry and learned about the water cycle. Thank you Spring Rivers Foundation for inviting us to be a part of your educational outreach program for the day. We had a great time interacting with all the children and look forward to helping again in the future!

CLEANING UP OUR ADOPTED TRAILS

Our wonderful volunteers helped with the clean-up of two trails adopted by the Shasta Land Trust. The Old 99 Trail and part of the River Trail were combed over and cleared of litter, which benefits the environment and local members of our community.

We would like to give a big thank you to everyone who came out to help with the trail clean-up. We rely on help for various tasks, such as trail maintenance, and would not be able to keep these trails clean without the assistance of our helpful volunteers.

WE WILL MISS YOU
"There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story." - Linda Hogan

John Haynes surely had a story to tell. He was never the loudest and lived by the motto that you learned more by listening than by the noise that is often surrounded by mindless chatter. John's knowledge of the natural world was immense and as a trained landscape architect, he was a master of knowing exactly how to turn the outside world into his masterpiece.

We lost John suddenly a few short days ago and there are truly no words that can be expressed that tell the story of a man that lived a life as full as John. With his best friend and lovely wife by his side, John and Deb traveled the world together and experienced more adventures than many will accomplish in a lifetime. They were inseparable and through the orchards at their Palo Cedro homemade a life together that was filled with memories surely not to fade.

As a long-time supporter of the Shasta Land Trust and a valued member of the Lands Committee, John provided invaluable knowledge during the initial fazes of our land transaction deals and became a respected voice of local conservation. He will be missed by all that met him and yet his legacy will live on through the projects he led and the knowledge he bestowed upon his work.
