Mission Valley Chorus was pleased to host this years 2019 fall AIM Pep Rally!  We are so proud of all of our Region 12 sisters going to this years International competition!  We wish you all the best of luck.  Our “On the Bayou” theme was a hit and Lysanda Lee did not disappoint as MC!  We just had to make sure the Directors did not feel left out of the Bayou fun so we gave them their own inflatable crocs to rock in with!

Last month the management and music teams had a wonderful seminar with Jan Carley, author of “Harmony From the Inside Out” and “The Overtone Effect”.  We learned useful communication techniques to help keep the chorus informed and harmonious!  You can check out her services and books here https://www.innercoachofbarbershop.com
Coming to a Theater Near You…The 60’s show!

Get ready to LAUGH, SING, and DANCE! We are going back in time to a ridiculous and hysterical episode of Laugh-In. We’ve got the host, the wall, and the bold, funny, and outrageous characters! Our audience will sing along, dance along, and win fun prizes. Song of Sonoma is getting’ groovy on October 5th at 2pm and 7pm.

August AIM Weekend
Our members had a wonderful time at AIM, and we learned a ton. We were proud to participate in the pep rally. We wish the very best of luck to Bay Area Showcase, Sacramento Valley, Diablo Vista, and RetroActive. We’ll be rooting for you!

TedX SonomaCounty
A tremendous opportunity has presented itself to Song of Sonoma. We are always strategizing how to reach a broader Sonoma County audience so that our community has a chance to learn about barbershop, and so that singers in our community have a chance to come participate with us. Well…we will be performing at this year’s TedXSonomaCounty on November 2nd.

The event’s theme is BALANCE. The theme is a perfect fit! In our music, balance is key. And for many of us on Song of Sonoma, participating in this chorus provides us invaluable “me time” to explore our creative talents and musical passion, as we balance very busy lives. For more information about the event, please go to: TedXSonomaCounty.
We had a fun month of rehearsals, performances, guests and a new Director!

We have been excited to have several guests this month and will be looking forward to auditioning soon.
We had a performance for a new crowd this month.  They were so welcoming and excited about our entertainment and looking forward to having us back.  We love sharing our joy and love it even more when the crowd loves it too!  We also had our monthly performance for our dear "regulars".  This is a great indicator to us as to our entertainment value: the crowd has grown!  I, personally, was excited to overhear someone in the crowd notice that Bella has grown in size too.
We honored Jocie Hagan who has graciously been our Interim Director.  She has put so much effort into Bella to keep us inspired, skilled, and joyful.  Thank you Jocie!

We hired a new Director!  His name is Ben Cheney.  Bella is thrilled to learn and grow together with Ben. Here is a message from Ben:

I’d first like to say thank you to Region 12 for welcoming me with open arms and for reaching out to me so quickly! I’ve barely got my foot in the water for this, and people have been so kind to offer me a hand while I begin my journey with Bella! My Bio:      I studied Music Education with emphasis in musical instrumentation and chordal analysis at Capital University in Ohio. Though originally focused in instruments, I began to sing with the Chordsmen under the direction of Craig Courtney. I sang with them from my first day of university to my last semester.
Much of my learning in the choral world is derived from classical singing until about 3-4 years ago where I joined Bridge Town Sound to sing Lead with under the direction of John Burry. With BTS and John Burry at the helm, I got to enjoy and learn the joys that is Barbershop.
After years with Bridge Town Sound, I was presented an opportunity with Bella when I met them on the first night. Out of pure chance, I went with my mother to be a guest while she was learning about Bend and finding the nearby SAI chapter of the area. Once my mother introduced herself and talked about my background, Bella thought to give me an opportunity and asked me try out to become their director. To my recollection, they held a vote and I was voted unanimously to become their director! I’ve only had one session with them so far, but I’m very excited to work with Bella!
A fun fact for everyone to know about me is that I’ve lived in 4 different countries: USA, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom!

Enjoy the upcoming Fall!

Bay Area Showcase is busy with all kinds of preparations for International Convention.

Our Front Row and Riser people are working very hard under the direction of Julie Baxter (our choreographer) and Laura Bode (our riser guru). Our Newbies got to attend a fully packed Boot Camp to help them prepare for “BASC-life” and International Convention as well. With a little magic we got Julie Starr to sign on another year as our dedicated director. And this week, we are hoping for even more magic, when we are being coached by the incomparable Dale Syverson, Master Director of RichTones. Our quartets have done a fabulous job singing at a Saturday evening concert series at Vasona Park which was concluded with Shout, Sister, Shout! It is a great way to celebrate summer and we hope many of you got to visit.
Look forward to seeing you all in Sacramento soon. Jette Sorensen, BASC Team Coordinator

SACRAMENTO VALLEY CHORUS had a very busy month. We attended the Bayou Bash at AIM weekend August 16-18th, 2019 and were awarded the travel trophy for having 95% of our members in attendance. AIM was a great time to get more education on the "nuts and bolts" of barbershop style singing.  A lot of information was gained through many wonderful classes. AIM weekend was also a time to catch up with our Region 12 singing sisters and reconnect our long friendships.

At AIM weekend SVC performed our over the top "Monster Finals Package" that had everyone buzzing. There were so many creative costumes with such scary details. We are hoping to both entertain and impress the International audience in NOLA should we be able to score in the top 10 choruses. I would hate to estimate how much stage makeup was used collectively for our performance. Everyone swore they used an entire box of tissues and a jar of Pond's cold cream to transform from the monster costume back into an everyday chorus sister. It was a full moon, so some of us never made the full transition. Other hotel guests were a bit frightened by our sudden appearance in the lobby.

On the weekend of August 23-24th, 2019 we were graced with Ryan Heller, Master Director 700, of Alamo Metro Chorus from Austin, Texas. Ryan quickly made his way into our hearts and soul as he truthfully delivered some solid advice. His professional coaching was heart felt and he managed to influence SVC at our core. Our Master Director, Dede Nibler and Ryan made a dynamic duo as we worked hard to consistently incorporate their vast knowledge of the skills of musicality and performance. We want him back to coach with us again. He artfully provided us with high level goals as we sail towards our performance in New Orleans.

SVC wants to thank all our coaches we had this year, including our In-House Coach - Shirley Kout and our fearless leader Dede. Many extra hours were spent outside of that infamous "one night a week" in the pursuit of those extra points.

SVC wants to take this opportunity to wish all Region 12's Sweet Adeline sisters a truly rewarding experience in NOLA. We have all worked diligently to compete at our highest level of achievement. We are proud of BASC, DVC, Retroactive, and SVC representing Region 12 at such a high level. We are all winners as we spin the magic of our musical passion together and share it with our audiences. Life on a high note!

SummerFest Sizzler

With temperatures nearing 100 degrees on June 29th, California HEAT staged our annual patriotic concert to an enthusiastic crowd at the Red Bluff Veterans Hall.  This fundraiser is in its 5th year and our town once more turned out to honor veterans, first responders and all those wishing to celebrate Independence Day.  California HEAT was joined on stage by Platinum Finish Quartet and Happenstance Trio to round out the evening of a capella harmony.
