Arts Ablaze kicked off a very busy month for RASN, with all of the RASN Providers coming together in Beaudesert for a round table meeting, before heading out to Kooralbyn for the conference and festival events from 2 – 6 October. We were especially proud to see all of the presentations, performances, exhibitions and activities involving RASN Providers at Arts Ablaze. The SCO was very proud to support the involvement of more than 70 regional artists and artsworkers at Arts Ablaze, through our support for the First Nations and heARTh programs, local artist mentorships, and travel costs for a number of representatives from RRVR communities. The feedback from participants is still streaming in, and there is no doubt that Arts Ablaze provided a much-needed opportunity for regional representatives to come together for a deep dive into the unique landscape of regional arts practice and delivery in Queensland. Our heartfelt congratulations to all involved, and especial thanks to Bronwyn Davies, Shelley Pisani, Alicia Jones, Michelle Blair, Andrew Wright & Louise Bahnson, Sarah Moynihan and Norm Horton.

Why RASN?

In a landscape of so many arts service organisations in Queensland that include regional service in their brief, it begs the question of why a construct like RASN might even be necessary.
How do you provide access to, and meaningful engagement with the arts, when faced with the challenges of vast geographical spread and, extremely low population density, and in many cases recurrent cycles of natural disaster, and the impacts of intergenerational disadvantage?

BEMAC at Arts Ablaze Conference
The BEMAC team from Access Community Services were delighted to attend the recent Arts Ablaze conference which encouraged arts workers from all across the state to gather, network, showcase and share ideas.
The BEMAC team were also pleased to lead the Access for the Regions panel at the event, which showcased the great work that organisations are doing across the state, and facilitated strong discussion of how to grow our creative and cultural sector across regional and remote Queensland.
BEMAC’s Arts Engagement Officer for Logan region, Grace Edward (pictured above), also spoke about some of the exciting creative work BEMAC is involved in within our rich multicultural communities in the Logan and Ipswich region as part of the RASN program.

BEMAC are excited to offer a FREE workshop to Ipswich Arts workers, artists, muso’s and more. This event will provide practical business advice, offer tips on how to grow your creative passion into a thriving business and answer burning questions such as:
How do I get my arts idea off the ground? How do I start a creative business? Do I need a manager / agent? Where can I find partners and support? Can I get a grant? How can I expand what I am already doing on a small-scale?

Diversity With Dance
BEMAC through RASN has been supporting the Diversity With Dance project in Logan. A program which allows all people to have access to health and wellness. Diversity and Wellness day will help raise funds to sponsor Diversity with Dance Instructors to complete the Certificate III in Fitness.

Mantua Sewing School Training Program
BEMAC through RASN funding is proud to be supporting the first group of ladies through Mantua Sewing School training program.
Mantua Sewing Studio realised women of refugee and migrant backgrounds had an amazing talent and knowledge for sewing that the Australian fashion industry could benefit from. The idea for a sewing program was then born, providing these women with skills and experience for future employment.

It’s been a busy last month and a bit around the region and the state with a number of conferences and public information nights on the move.
NQ RASN had a blast at Arts Ablaze and was very proud to be joined by Big Eye Theatre who danced with the host nation the Mununjali peoples.
It was great to catch up with the other providers and keep abreast of what’s relevant in each region.
After Arts Ablaze, we convened our inaugural Steering Committee meeting, with representation from across the North Queensland region including a mix of arts, local government, First Nations, and community expertise. Along with our North Queensland host organisation, Umbrella Studios, we were finally able to move into our permanent location in Townsville, after spending most of 2019 in temporary locations.
On 15 October we welcomed a large group of artists and artsworkers to the new space to talk about the first year of RASN, and what lies ahead for the region. Stay tuned for news about the launch of our first major cross-regional initiative, that will connect communities from Hughenden to Palm Island through an iconic art project.

As the RASN Provider for the region, Empire Theatre Projects led several initiatives at Arts Ablaze that fostered cross-regional connectivity, and showcased the talents and creativity of communities across the state.
One such initiative was to create specialised programming for Regional Arts Development Fund representatives at the conference, including a breakfast where Margaret Power from University of Southern Queensland shared her research on the impact of RADF-funded arts projects in Western Queensland. Light up the Regions enabled creative participation and representation for communities throughout regional Queensland, with 45 lanterns on display throughout the event.

We are a community group on a mission to create an annual public art event which promotes art and culture, supports tourism and increases the liveability of the Goondiwindi area, and improves community participation in arts and culture across the region. It is anticipated that each year the Lanescape Group will focus on creating public art work throughout the town with the intention of creating an art trail within the CBD.

The intrepid crew from Western Queensland brought 23 representatives to Arts Ablaze, making the 15 hour journey from Blackall by bus to showcase the cultural stories from Dress the Central West at Arts Ablaze. This dynamic performance brought together wearable art, live music, and place-based stories from Western Queensland, and created new opportunities for collaboration and creation including work with Mununjali dancer Mitchell Currie, and Nickeema Williams from CQ RASN. Straight on the heels of Arts Ablaze, Red Ridge has continued to blaze other trails in Western Queensland with the Matilda Way Art Trail well and truly underway, with water towers already completed in Mount Isa and Windorah (please check their socials to see if any others), then on to Thargomindah for Channel Country Ladies Day.

The CAA team represented the SEQN region proudly and showcased the strengths of our work and our region which saw us delivering each and every day of the conference and festival.

• a presentation on our work in creative placemaking and activation with Moreton Bay Regional Council at the Caboolture Hub and Somerset Regional Council at The Condensery
• a presentation on our creative product development with Sunshine Coast Council and Third Drawer Down which you can now buy ONLINE
• sharing as part of a Panel on engagement how we have been working to support First Nations creatives including our work with Blaklash
• showcasing the amazing artists and communities as part of our Let's Dance project (Somerset) and our Plug In Music Development program (Gympie)
• supporting new connections and emerging collaborations through hosting networking drinks for arts and cultural workers from across our SEQN region
• our Board Director, Phil Smith, who took on the massive task of MCing the Big Pitch Tent for two whole days

What a busy couple of months of great events; Wallaby Creek Festival followed very closely by Arts Ablaze Regional Arts Conference.
Wallaby Creek Festival is a music festival in the bush 45kms South of Cooktown, which has been running annually for 16 years.The festival provided RAO, Warratah Nicholls, with a great opportunity to catch up with the organisers and regional artists to discuss how CY&TS RASN can assist them.
Wallaby Creek Festival has a strong community focus, giving priority and exposure to local emerging artists, providing them the opportunity to perform alongside their professional peers. As well as offering workshops and mentoring to help develop their techniques and promote their careers. Several local musicians have launched their careers here. This year local youth band, ‘Legends of Perhaps’, had the honour of christening the new Monsoon Stage, that had been built through community workshops and a grant from the, ‘Stronger Communities Program’.
The festival includes a Workshop space and a Kids festival, both a hive of creativity with storytelling, clowns and acrobats, weaving, dancing, singing, drumming workshops as well as fabulous array of activity from recycling beach debris to building and programming your own robot.
Susan Kelly of Natural Images was the resident photographer and produced some beautiful images which she has happily shared with us here.

Waratah also travelled to Arts Ablaze with two artists from CY&TS region who were supported by Flying Arts travel Arts Ablaze subsidy and RASN Arts Ablaze bursary. Fiona Elisala and Kora Bosun from Moa Island, thoroughly enjoyed listening to the guest speakers and forums and meeting people. They will be making a short video about their experience to share with stakeholders and artists which will be available on Moa Arts Facebook soon.
It was wonderful to see all the RASN peers again who had come from all corners of the state. The conference was inspiring, insightful and educational as well asking some very valuable questions. Where will the Arts be in 2030?
There was so much fabulous things happening,including the Artour Showcase day, it was definitely food for thought. CY&TS RASN is now committing to dedicating energy to getting more performing arts into the region, but also asking the questions; ‘What are we importing? What are we exporting? How can we promote, assist and increase performers from regional areas to perform in the major centres?'

The National Performing Arts Partnership Framework

The new Framework responds to the recommendations of the nationwide consultation process in 2018, which included 8,026 survey responses, 370 formal submissions and 15 forums across the country.

The inaugural Art of Attraction Summit is the first all-inclusive opportunity in Australia to connect with, be introduced to, learn from, and become inspired by leaders at the very forefront of using publicly-accessible art to attract visitors, expand seasonal visitation and increase the average length of stay.
