It's a Farmers Market Showdown

September is a lovely transitional month for food. We still have some gorgeous tomatoes and corn and zucchini lurking around, and I actually picked the last of the summer peaches at a friend’s orchard just a week ago. But the apples are in full force, not to mention the pears. Bell peppers, shell beans, cabbage, cauliflower, and pumpkins are all making an appearance. It does feel like the best of both seasons.

So, with one foot in summer and the other in fall, what to pick? The question really is . . . what don’t you make?

This beautiful puffed pancake incorporates the sweetness of summer with the incoming flavors of fall. Better yet, you will not believe how ridiculously easy it is to make. Can you make pancake batter? Then you can make this.

PARSNIP AND GOLDEN BEET SOUP

Deeply golden in color, deeply flavorful in taste. Moving into fall, this soup is a reason to be glad there’s a chill in the evening air.

STANDING RIB ROAST

Not seasonal per se, but pop-culture seasonal. Are you a Downton Abbey fan/nerd/acolyte? Me too. To the extent that Gary and I went to see some of the cast members speak at an event last week, and bought tickets for opening night of the movie, and followed it up with a Downton Abbey dinner for some of our other similarly infatuated friends.
I am not embarrassed at all (though my kids might be, a little). And I did not make anyone wear period costumes, so I remain short of irrational. Here is a standing rib roast worthy of the Crawleys and any visiting royalty that might pop by.
