Thought of the Week

With thanks to ... Rabbi Dovid Gutnick

I heard it told (by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks) that when famed Hebrew writer Shai Agnon was receiving his Nobel Prize for literature, the photographers asked him to pose with a pen as if writing. After the photograph someone had the idea to see if Shai had actually written on the paper and if so what he wrote at this triumphant, crowning moment of his career.
On they page they found a simple Hebrew line from the Days of Awe prayers (derived from Bereishis 3:19):“Adam yesodo me’afar vesofo le’afar” (“A man’s origin is dust and his destiny is dust”)

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is, if nothing else, all about a realignment of perspective. Who am I? Who is my creator? What are my true and meaningful aspirations and achievements?
