> Helping BBOXX Shine Brighter
We’ve done multiple Lean Data studies with BBOXX, an off-grid pay-as-you-go solar energy provider. We sat down with Iwona Bisaga to hear how BBOXX has used the Lean Data results to address customer confusion with payment fees and to invest in top-performing sales channels. Read the interview here.
> Harmonizing? Cooperating? Directing?
We had our first all-team staff retreat last week in Stoke-on-Trent, with 28 team members, 2 dogs, and one baby. In addition to spending a morning being hunted, we got a ton of value learning our individual and team conflict styles, using the Kraybill Conflict Style Inventory. Don’t let the mid-90s web design fool you, this stuff is really useful.
> So Much for the Good News
The U.S. Impact Investing Alliance has played an important role in helping create Opportunity Zones (OZ). The potential, they say, is huge: “There are currently trillions of dollars’ worth of unrealized gains in the capital markets. If even a portion of those gains are moved to invest in distressed communities, it could have a transformative impact.” Unfortunately, the wicked witch(es) got to OZ first. A front-page article in the NY Times says that most Opportunity Zone transactions have been the super-rich doing real estate deals they were going to do anyway (Anthony Scaramucci, Chris Christie, Jared Trump, oh my!). If only we had a pair of ruby slippers, and requirements for good impact data, to qualify for the tax break.
> Data Bias and Gender
We’re big fans of Caroline Criado Perez whose book Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men is a serious wake up call for all of us.  She’s got a new newsletter that you’ll want to get in your inbox once a week. In it she responds to questions like, "What was the worst example of the gender data gap you came across?" "How do we get men to read [your book] / are any men reading it?" and, most often, "How are you not furious ALL THE TIME?" Subscribe to get the answer!
> We’re on the Internets
Our new website is up, full of fun facts and lots of numbers: our 150 researchers in 34 countries who have conducted voice surveys in 32 languages, helping us listen to 99,205 people across 413 projects with 219 companies. If only we had a partridge in a pear tree. Shout out to the amazing team of Adam, Mackenzie and Frank at Landscape Design who helped create our new branding. You can also catch us braving the Twittersphere @60_decibels.
> Bringing in User Voice in the UK
Shout-out to the Young Foundation, whose new initiative “Nothing about us, without us,” asks whether you have to listen to the people you serve in order to improve what you do and how you do it. Spoiler alert: you do. We were happy to contribute to their report, which is coming out soon. And it’s not too late—if you have something to say, they want to hear from you. Send an email to hello@youngfoundation.org or tweet @the_young_fdn to chime in.
> We're in the CDC Toolbox
The UK's CDC investment arm has been using Lean Data as part of its Rapid Insights Toolbox. They shared the results of 14 Lean Data projects in their investment portfolio. Some headlines: 28% of their customers live below the $3.10/day poverty line, with one company at 61% and another at 9%. More here: CDC Insights.
> From Sasha: What it Means to Listen Well
Here’s a recent blog post from our co-founder, Sasha Dichter. In it, Sasha talks about an afternoon bike ride with his daughter in the Scottish highlands, and what he learned from her about listening: “To truly listen to those around us, whether colleagues or friends or beneficiaries of the programmatic work that we do, we must meet people on their terms, not ours, and understand how power dynamics and culture color all that we do and say.”
