DEAF ROC: Building Collaborations Between
Deaf and Hearing Scientists


Deaf and hard-of-hearing scientists, who are under-represented in biomedical fields, face barriers when trying to build collaborations with hearing colleagues. The second biennial DEAF ROC conference, held at URMC this August, brought together Deaf and hearing scientists to help them navigate and build collaborations. UR CTSI Seminar Series


David Adler, M.D., Ph.D. will present, “From Masiphumelele to the Strong Emergency Department.” Adler has conducted research related to cervical cancer prevention in South Africa and in the Emergency Department at Strong Memorial Hospital. His research trajectory will be discussed in the context of UR CTSI KL2 Career Development and Pilot support and how it has accelerated his success in obtaining NIH funding.

Roc Health Data: Academic Disparities


The back-to-school season is one of excitement and anticipation; however, Monroe County is rife with academic disparities. Among fourth grade students in the Rochester City School District, only 8% were proficient in Language Arts during the 2016-2017 school year. Students proficient in Monroe County as a whole was 35%. UR CTSI SCORE Monthly Meeting


Join our October meeting to learn, “Best Practices for Being Prepared for an FDA Inspection,” presented by Karen Kosar, CAPTAIN, US Public Health Service Investigator, FDA and Joanne Schlossin, FDA Consumer Safety Officer. The session objectives will be to describe the general FDA inspection experience, identify characteristics and processes of successful inspection sites, and discuss best practices for adhering to federal regulations. The meeting is open to all UR staff, faculty and students. Join us in person or on Zoom.

Red Cell Club Conference


The Red Cell Club Conference is an interactive meeting that fosters the exchange of published and unpublished data on all aspects of erythrocyte biology. The University of Rochester has a rich, fifty-year history of red blood cell-related research. Learn more and register.

Pediatrics Research Celebration Day


Hosted by the Department of Pediatrics, the day will showcase the incredible pediatric research being conducted across the UR Medical Center and features a lecture by this year’s Gilbert B. Forbes Scholar, Robert M. Blum, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., Emeritus William H. Gates senior professor of the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the immediate past director at Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute. A poster session will be held in the Flaum Atrium from 10:00 - 11:45 am. Submit poster information on any child health topic by Friday, October 11. Learn more.

Toward the Clinical Translation of
Ultra-High Field MRI


This free event will feature speakers from across the national CTSA Program network, and will interest:
  • Clinical investigators who currently use or anticipate using ultra-high field imaging in their clinical practice
  • Individuals with interests in clinical application of ultra-high field imaging
  • Early career investigators with a dual interest in ultra-high field imaging and the management of a particular clinical problem.

PCORI Announces New
Funding Opportunities


Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCORI) will be awarding up to $1.6 million through two special project funding opportunities:

Engagement Award: Accelerating the Adoption of Tools and Resources
This provides support for projects that give organizations and community groups the opportunity to scale up or adopt meaningful engagement tools and processes with more communities, stakeholders and patients with the intent to further build skills.

Engagement Award: Community Convening Around Patient-Centered Outcomes Research This provides funding to organizations and community groups to hold multi-stakeholder meetings that may include patients, researchers, clinicians, health system leaders and other stakeholders.

Letter of intent for both awards due Friday, November 15. Learn more.
 

Annual CFAR World AIDS Day
Scientific Symposium


In honor of World AIDS Day, the UR Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) will host a scientific symposium. Keynote presentations will take place at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. The poster session will be held from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Poster registration deadline is Friday, November 1. Submit your registration form by email to Laura Enders.
