Military historian and former Erindale College principal Desmond Morton has died. Morton began his career at UTM teaching Canadian history in 1970, and served a three-year term as Erindale’s vice-principal, humanities and academic before his appointment as principal in 1986. During his tenure, Morton oversaw construction of the Kaneff Centre and the creation of the joint theatre and drama and art and art history programs with the Sheridan Institute of Advanced Technology and Learning. Morton wrote more than 40 books on Canadian military, social and political history. For his contributions, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1985 and an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1996.

Employment strategist and Erindale College alumna Alana James (HBA 1996) has died. James enjoyed twenty years as an employment and career specialist, including seven years with UTM’s Career Centre where she helped students and recent graduates to find meaningful work that matched their skills and abilities. James is remembered for her commitment to healthy living and enjoying life to the fullest. Donations in her memory may be directed to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Teaching assistant and alumnus (HBSc 2011) Alvin Singh has died. Singh worked with the Office of the Vice-Principal Academic and Dean and was a teaching assistant with the biology departments at UTM and UTSC, and with UTM’s Department of Psychology. Singh is remembered for his dedication to teaching, which was recognized with the June Scott Teaching Excellence Award in 2014.

Professor Emeritus Ian Orchard has been appointed Acting Vice-President and Principal at UTM effective Sept. 2019 to June 2020. Orchard was previously a professor of biology at UTM, and served in several senior leadership roles, including eight years as V-P and Principal at UTM and three years as V-P Academic and Provost at the University of Waterloo. Orchard takes over from Acting V-P and Principal Amrita Daniere who has filled the role during the leave of Professor Ulrich Krull.

Tammy Cook has been appointed executive director, Facilities Management & Planning. Cook’s 25-year career in private and public sector includes positions with the University Health Network, Sun Life Financial and most recently, George Brown College.
Kristin Lovell has been appointed director of alumni relations with the Office of Advancement. Previously, Lovell held roles in development and alumni relations at U of T, McGill University, TVO and the Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi, United Emirates. In her new role, Lovell will expand and deepen alumni engagement across all departments at UTM.
