The tent – sponsored by Brighton & Hove Labour Left Alliance – will be available throughout the Labour Party Conference.
A highlight will be a public meeting addressed by Chris Williamson, the socialist MP for Derby North, at 1pm on Sunday, September 22.
Others speakers at the tent will include representatives of the Labour Representation Committee(LRC), Jewish Voice for Labour, Labour Against the Witch-hunt, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and Brighton & Hove Labour Left Alliance.
The Freedom of Speech Tent will provide latest details about a series of events – scheduled over two days – at the Rialto Theatre, a delightful city-centre Grade II listed theatre and bar that is only a 10-minute stroll from the conference centre at 11 Dyke Road, BN1 3FE.
Speakers – from 2pm on Saturday and on Monday – include Chris Williamson MP, Jackie Walker, Kerry-Ann Mendoza, Professor David Miller, and Ken Loach (to be confirmed).
There will also be the first public showing in Brighton and Hove of “WitchHunt”, the Jon Pullman documentary film, which features Jackie Walker and explores the connections between the attacks on Labour, the ongoing tragedy of Palestine, and the wider struggle against race-based oppression.
The two inaugural events at the Rialto Theatre will be at 4pm and at 7pm on Saturday, September 21.
Speakers will debate, from personal experience, the chilling effect on free speech of the Labour Party’s current disciplinary procedures.
They will include Chris Williamson, Tina Werkman (LAW), Alex Braithwaite (local Labour council candidate suspended during her campaign), and Greg Hadfield (twice suspended and now re-instated).
And, if you need even more reasons to come along, all people who attend the Rialto Theatre will have a unique opportunity to win one of two signed prints of the Steve Bell cartoons that The Guardian refused to print.
Admission to all events will be free – on a strictly first-come, first-served basis.
But to guarantee entry into a raffle with a chance to win a Steve Bell print, please register now via this page. All registrants will be kept informed of the full schedule of events at the Freedom of Speech Tent and at the Rialto Theatre.
* Both The Freedom of Speech Tent and Rialto Theatre are within walking distance of the Brighton Centre and close to the Churchill Square bus-stops in Western Road that serve all parts of Brighton and Hove. We encourage all attendees to travel, if necessary, by public transport.
