Meet our New Teachers

Susi Pucci (San Francisco, California, United States)

Ms. Pucci is Literacy Coach at ASV. This will be her 20th year in education: “I started my career in Lesotho, Southern Africa. I have since taught in California, the Dominican Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Mexico,” she related for ASV Voices. Her first impressions about ASV are really positive: “The teachers and staff are welcoming, highly professional, dedicated, warm and kind.”

Emily Corrigan. Atlanta (Georgia, United States)

Ms. Corrigan is the new homeroom teacher in Grade 5 Blue. She studied in North Carolina, where she played volleyball and beach volleyball for the university teams. “I had always had the desire to see the world and help people along the way. Prior to coming to ASV, I taught at an international school in Turkey and at a bilingual school in Madrid,” Ms. Ms. Corrigan told. When describing Valencia, she looks excited and quickly says that she has “fallen in love with the city, from the people, the food, and simply walking and biking along the streets. It exudes so much culture.” Regarding the school community she says that “the ASV family has been so welcoming and I truly feel like a member of this team.”

MAP Testing for Grades 3 - 10

During the week of September 23-27, 2019, ASV will begin administering our annual Fall testing of the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP).  Students will take both the MAP Reading and MAP Math tests on separate days for each test within the next two weeks.  Each test is approximately one hour, although the length may vary for each student.  We would like you to know a few important facts about MAP testing:
  • Every year this test is administered twice annually to all ASV Grade 3-10 students.
  • Students do not need to prepare for it.
  • Students can take the time necessary to complete MAP, and often the longer students take, the better they perform (taking time on each question contributes to accuracy).
  • MAP is not a student ranking test and it is used primarily to measure student academic growth in Reading and Math from the Fall to Spring testing administrations, as well as to inform the student’s teacher where the teacher may need to adjust the curriculum, teaching methodology or differentiate instruction.
The school uses this information in a variety of ways, including to track each students’ growth and make data-informed decisions to meet each student’s needs.  The most important thing you can do is to ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep before the test and has a good breakfast before school.  Your child’s teacher will let you know the date that your child will be taking each test, and the tests will be administered during the first period of the day.

You will receive the results of this MAP assessment results with your child’s report card.   For more information, a parent toolkit is available online from MAP:  https://www.nwea.org/parent-toolkit/.

Call for Parent Delegates

Each class in each grade level at ASV is offered the opportunity to select a Parent Delegate. The Parent Delegate’s role is to attend monthly meetings with the appropriate Principal, communicate information to parents, share concerns of parents (prior to meetings), assist with preparations for special events, and support ASV's mission.

If you would like to participate as a parent delegate, please inform the office by completing this online form no later than Monday, September 30, 2019 at 16:30.

The school will announce the Parent Delegate list during the first week of October 2019, prior to our first Preschool and Elementary Parent Delegate meeting, which will take place on Monday, October 21, 2019, at 15:15 in Conference Room 1.  Middle School and High School Parent Delegates will first meet on Wednesdays and their first meeting is Wednesday, October 30, 2019, from 15:30 to 16:15. Please note that the Preschool and Elementary delegates will meet on Mondays, and Middle School and High School delegate meetings will be held on Wednesdays.

Preschool and Elementary School

Parents Night for Grades 2-5

Families with children in grades 2 through 5 joined the Elementary School team on Thursday, September 19, to participate in the annual orientation activity known as Parents Night. The event started with a general presentation in the theater and then participants followed specific talks in each class.

ASV embraces the workshop model developed by Teachers College (Columbia University) to deeply engage students in curricular content. Classroom presentations described how this model is applied in each specific grade level and how families can support through shared reading and other resources children’s growth as readers and writers. Teachers in charge of the required Spanish courses (Spanish language, Sociales and Valencian language), as well as our specialist for PE, Music, and the school counselor, presented their areas.

English Wooks set up a book fair in the atrium from 16:00 to 19:00. On Thursday, September 26, coinciding with the Middle School and High School Parents Night, this bookshop will be back.

Fill me Up! Preschool PBIS Campaign

Creating a strong classroom community is for any start of the school year. Preschool students need to know who can help them, how to move around the classroom what will happen in their day.  To create this classroom community teachers teach the desired expectations and routines to students. We teach expectations and routines through positively recognizing the ASV Values (Come Prepared, Act Responsible, Respect Others and Engage in Learning).

Our campaign to start the year is Fill Me Up! Students are rewarded for making good choices with a sticker that they add to their class jar. You can support your child making good choices at home by recognizing when they are prepared, responsible, respectful and/or engaged. This campaign will continue for a few weeks.

Nursery-PreKinder 2: The Creative Curriculum -The First Six Weeks

The start of the school year is an exciting time, there is so much that is new that it can sometimes be overwhelming for young learners. This year PreKinder 1 and 2 have taken a new approach to the start of school by adopting a research-based curriculum plan called The First Six Weeks. This unit gives much needed time to build a classroom community based on trust. Only when students feel safe and valued can we observe them at their best. With six weeks of timely, well-paced lessons centered around building a classroom community content learning and experiences will be all the richer.

Look here the first Preschool Assembly of the 2019-2020 academic year!

Official Documents on School Fees

The Business Office invites ASV families  to check out the official documentation describing the school fees and payments, which is available both on the ASV website and the Parent Resources Google Site. You will find the details of the fees and concepts that will be billed during the new school year. Other concepts are not detailed yet since they correspond to activities and products that you voluntarily request and whose content is informed during the course of the course (for example, yearbooks, trips, ...)

We remind you that the first receipt of the 2019-2020 academic year has been issued this week. As of October, regular invoices will be made the first week of the month.

In any case, receipts have to be paid before the week after the billing by the means established and authorized by the school. For your convenience and for security reasons, we would appreciate your direct payment (giving our bank account data) or deposit into the school account. In both cases, please contact Mr. Alfredo Querol (Operations Manager) by emailing him to alfredoquerol@asvalencia.org. Mr. Querol will inform you properly about the procedure to follow and the necessary data.
