Excited for 'The Current War' movie?
Check out the exhibit at SPARK.

The collection at SPARK Museum includes actual artifacts from the historic War of the Currents involving the world’s greatest inventor and two of the world’s greatest engineers: Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla.

Why is this relevant right now?

Because moviegoers fascinated by the Hollywood film “The Current War” (opening in theaters Oct. 4) will want to see many of the actual artifacts from that 140-year-old fight at SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention in Bellingham.

“The War of the Currents” is a permanent exhibit at SPARK Museum describing the series of events that pitted Edison against Westinghouse in the race to determine the technology that would power the world – AC or DC. It features rare and beautiful artifacts such as Edison’s first successful electric lamp, demonstrated at his Menlo Park lab in 1879.

Also on display is a section of the actual Edison DC power distribution cable installed in New York City in 1883 and unearthed after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. Interspersed with the artifacts are a number of interactive displays, including a working model of the Egg of Columbus: a device designed by Nikola Tesla in 1887 to demonstrate the concept of rotating electromagnetic fields.

What to do during
12 hours in Bellingham

Bellingham, you might know, is a vibrant and beautiful college town of roughly 90,000 people. We’re tucked into the northwest corner of Washington state, with a coastline that kisses the Salish Sea. We’re also within less than an hour’s drive of the pristine Mount Baker wilderness.

It goes without saying, then, that there is a TON to do in and around Bellingham.

But what if you only have half a day? Never fear. We have a short tour of downtown businesses sure to keep you and your crew entertained during your 12 hours in Bellingham. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., here’s a sample itinerary for a fun day with friends or family in downtown Bellingham.

A Doctober treat

The SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention is a co-presenter of WBCN and The American Revolution during Doctober at Pickford Film Center. This documentary tells the previously untold story of the early days of the underground, radical radio station WBCN-FM, set against the social, political and cultural changes in Boston and nationally from the late-1960s through the early-1970s.

Screening dates are Oct. 23 and 26. Get your tickets, watch the film and then bring your ticket stub to SPARK for 20 percent off admission.
