Fall & the Metal Element
Who is ready for this season shift? I have to admit I'm over the dampness that Earth energy brings us. Luckily, Monday marks our fall equinox and I think we are all waiting with open arms!
As the energy of nature continues to descend from the yang energy of summer, we start to feel the call to do the same. After the busy, fun times of summer, we often welcome the routine that fall offers. The sun begins to set earlier day by day, reminding us to begin our own cycle of slowing down and turning inward.
Fall season is governed by the Metal element, which has an energetic quality of organization & setting boundaries. This is the time to finish up any big projects from spring and summer, so we can prepare for the deepest yin time of year that's up ahead. Metal energy is also about letting go, so in addition to letting go of projects, packed schedules and late summer nights, it's time to let go of anything that may be draining or wasting our energy reserves. We begin to find more introspection in the fall, giving up what no longer serves us or what keeps us from moving forward, making room for growth. Nature shows us how to let go in the most beautiful expression. All the trees begin to change lovely shades of yellow, red and orange, before eventually letting go of that beauty as the season moves forward.
Since it's the season of the lungs, get outside and breathe deeply. Walking meditation surrounded by fall colors and breathing in the crisp air of fall is very nurturing for the lungs. Also, with more routine in our schedules, this is a great time to get back into our yoga practice and spend some extra time with pranayama (breath work).
Happy Fall Equionx!
