Looking for a way to make dinner easier?

My new book -- Oh No! What Am I Making For Dinner? -- is nearing final edits, and I hope to have it up for sale in the next few weeks.

If you'd like to know more about it, you'll find details here:  The End of 5pm Panic

GRACE

Three simple ways to give yourself grace.

One of the most subtle ways we can be hard on ourselves is through self-talk. I picked up negative self-talk from one of my parents, who I'm sure didn't recognize it themselves, and would never have wanted to pass it on. But that happens. So this is something I've had to personally learn and practice. Maybe you could use it too?
  • First, just notice. Many of us speak negatively to ourselves every day without even realizing what we're doing. Try to take note of when you're telling yourself critical or hopeless words. Then...
  • Replace criticism with kindness. When you notice you’re having a self-critical rant in your head, stop the tape, and speak to yourself the way you would to your best friend.
  • Change the script. Rename “failures” as “lessons learned.” Replace “I’ll never change” with “I’m learning to change; it may take a while, and that’s okay.”
Speak kindly to yourself; you're always listening.

TRUTH

"It costs too much to eat healthy" -- or does it?

One of the objections people have to eating smart — be it whole foods, real food, gluten-free, Paleo, organic, etc. — is that it just costs too much to eat that way.

But in truth, it all depends on how you go about it.

I've put together an article with 20 tips from myself and others for keeping your food costs reasonable. Here's one of them:

Avoid all-or-nothing thinking. You don’t have to switch to 100% organic, grass-fed, etc. Think about the foods which make up the bulk of your diet, or the foods most likely to harm you, and consider how you might nudge those in a healthier direction. Not everything has to be organic: check out the Clean 15/Dirty Dozen for guidelines about what should always be purchased organic (or scrubbed extra well) and what doesn't need to be organic.

GOOD FOOD

Warm food for cool weather

As the weather cools, I'm more in the mood for hearty, warming foods. One seasonal food that's starting to sound good again is sausage. I love to make my own, because then I know it's free of corn syrup, MSG, soy, and other regrettable ingredients.

Homemade sausage may sound daunting, but it’s actually quite simple. (Very simple, for my British friends.) To make fresh sausage, you just buy the ground meat of your choice, add some spices and herbs, mix it all together, let it chill for a while, and then freeze or cook it.

If you can make seasoned hamburger patties, you can make sausage.

Depending on the spices you add, you can create breakfast sausage, Italian sausage, chorizo, anything, really!
