CWRA Ontario - Fall Updates and Mentoring Program

Dear CWRA Ontario Member or Subscriber

Welcome to fall (almost) and we hope you had a great summer! We'd like to think this could last all year, but we're starting to roll back into routine and would like you to join us in a few of the events that are coming up.

Additionally, if you know anyone who would benefit from these events and opportunities feel free to pass along and encourage them to come out!

Event - Panel Discussion on Issues Facing Internationally Trained Engineers
We invite you to join us Sept 24, 6.30 pm, at the Madison Avenue Pub.  Four outstanding speakers will be sharing their journeys:

  • Lauren Heuser: Strategy Officer & Managing Editor at News-Decoder. Author of the report “Closed Shops: Making Canada’s engineering profession more inclusive of international engineers”.
  • Adriana Gomez: Senior Program Manager at the Sustainable Neighbourhoods Team. Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.
  • Indra Maharjan: Director (A) Innovation, Technology and Alternate Delivery. Ontario Clean Water Agency.
  • Jalal Attari: Freelance Consultant with over 20 years of experience in teaching, research and consultancy in the engineering sector.

Call for enrolment in the CWRA Mentorship Program for Students and Young Professionals

Overview

The CWRA Ontario Branch Mentorship Program is intended to provide value to newer members of the CWRA, increase professional engagement in water management activities and in CWRA activities, and build long term connections among members of CWRA. The program allows for the transfer of information among generations of professionals in water resources. The Ontario mentorship program is affiliated with national CWRA mentorship activities.

Mentorship Program Structure:

The 2019/20 program session will run from October 2019 – May 2020. This mentoring program emphasizes building connections among all participants through group meetings that will develop a network of mentoring connections with experienced mentors and peers. The meeting schedule and some activities will be based on specific mentee interests, including meeting speakers. Mentees are expected to respond to meeting date polls, attend group meetings through the end of the session, fill out the feedback survey, and be proactive in communicating their mentoring needs.

Group meetings will be held at a location in Toronto that is accessible from the TTC and has parking nearby. Group meeting activities might include speed mentoring, speaker nights, and resume feedback discussion, but will be determined based on mentee group needs.

Applicants in Ontario from outside of the GTA are encouraged to participate. Program coordinators will work with them separately to find resources and contacts for their locations.

Program participants are encouraged to meet with members of the mentoring network outside group meetings. All participants will be encouraged to attend CWRA and other water-related events.

After the final meeting, all participants will be surveyed about their experiences in the program and ideas for improvement will be reincorporated in the next mentoring session.  Participants from past programs will be encouraged to attend some group meetings, and program participants will be encouraged to participate in future programs.

The CSHS-hydRology group is a community project and working group run by and for Canadian hydrologists as part of the Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences, and the main goal is build a package with the R Statistical Language that can address the unique challenges of data analysis and modelling in Canada. Our group is looking for members to join and help us to imagine, build, and test our package, as well as to join our community. Excellent reasons to join the hydRology group include:

- expanding your network of professionals across in Canada in the field of hydrology and water resources
- have an opportunity to learn more about a popular programming language, including building packages and documenting your work
- contribute ideas, code snippets, and provide valuable testing for the Canada-wide collaboration

If you are interested, our group has a conference call every second Wednesday of the month. Please sign up for our regular newsletter, and take a look at the hydRology page on the GreyJay website for more links and information.
UN World Water Day is celebrated on March 22nd of each year. In 2020 the UN World Water Day's Theme is Water and Climate Change. Please keep an eye out for events as they come up.
