Powell Street Festival:

On Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4, Vancouver celebrated its 43rd Annual Powell Street Festival! This festival was initiated in 1977 by Japanese Canadian Volunteers Association to celebrate the history of Japanese Canadians in the area.

This year, EWMA (Enterprising Women Making Art) had the opportunity to set up a booth and participate in the largest Japanese Canadian festival in Canada. Festival goers were able to take part in sumo wrestling, taiko drumming and many more activities, while also trying out some delicious and authentic Japanese cuisine!

Pride Festival:

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth at the Pride Festival on Sunday, August 4th! We are thrilled to continue taking part in this long standing Vancouver tradition to honour and celebrate LGBTQIA2+ members of the community. For those of you who weren't able to make it out this year, we hope to see you in 2020!

Golf for Good Volunteer Appreciation:

We are so grateful to have had so much help with planning and executing our 13th annual charitable Golf for Good tournament this past June! Since 2007, Golf for Good has invested over 2.1 million dollars into the community.

To acknowledge all the hard work that went into it, we held a Volunteer Appreciation event with tacos, laughs, and then some more tacos!

Fluor x Sorella Summer BBQ:

A big thank you goes out to Flour Canada for serving up some delicious burgers and hot dogs at Sorella. All of the residents had an amazing time chatting, face painting and playing Yahtzee on a gorgeous hot summer day!

Beyond The Street:

Starting September 15th, Tamara Loyer will be leading the Drop in for transwomen every Sunday at our 101 East Cordova St. location! This drop in was created to provide a safe space for transwomen and nonbinary femmes to connect with one another through talking circles, movie days, and much more! The drop in will also provide access to more resources on housing, counseling, legal advocacy and medical specialists.

The Alex:

On Tuesday, September 17th, the Provincial Government announced funding for women and children to access 83 new homes in Port Coquitlam and its surrounding communities. The Alex will provide safe housing, childcare and healthcare for single mothers and children - making a big difference in the lives of people living in the area.

Thank you to Mayor West, Glenn Pollock, and the City of Port Coquitlam for your unwavering support of this project. We look forward to being a part of this amazing community!

16 Steps to Discovery and Empowerment:

Beginning in mid September, we are excited to announce that we will be starting our 16 Steps to Discovery and Empowerment Group. This group was created from Dr. Charlotte Kasl's holistic approach to overcoming addiction, encouraging people to develop their own internal belief system from a place of self-love and acceptance. It provides individuals with an alternative way of looking at themselves and the society that they live in.

Every Thursday starting September 26th - November 7th 2019, we will be running a free workshop series at our 101 East Cordova location for our arts based community. No skills or previous art experience is required!

These workshops are intended to let participants gain a sense of freedom to express and explore their creativity in a new way! All basic supplies will be provided, but participants are more than welcome to bring in their own materials to add into their creations.

If you have any questions or want further information, please contact Bina Salimath at bina_salimath@atira.bc.ca

We look forward to seeing you there!
