Work at Site of February Mudflow to Begin on September 23

Mudflow Debris
Mudflow debris on Crescent Avenue
Work at the site of the February 2019 mudflow in Hurricane Gulch will get underway on Monday, September 23.

Work crews from Resource Environmental, the contractor selected by the City to remove mudflow debris, will begin mobilization and site preparation on September 23. The preparation work will continue through the week. The crews will secure the perimeter of the debris field, establish the staging area, install fencing and barriers, move and stage equipment, and create access for debris removal that will begin in earnest the following week of September 30.

At the beginning of the debris removal project, the hours of operation will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday. As the project progresses, hours could be extended to 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.

On Friday, September 20, traffic signs will be posted along the debris hauling route. Trucks removing debris will travel to Highway 101 via 2nd Street and Alexander Avenue. The staging area will be located at the corner of Crescent Avenue and Main Street. "No Parking" signs will be posted at this intersection and extending approximately 30 feet up Crescent Avenue and down Main Street.

During the week of September 16, City staff and consultants from Harris & Associates met with representatives from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to discuss the City's submission for state and federal assistance for the recovery effort. As part of the process, the City is working with Cal OES and FEMA to secure financial assistance for removing debris from private property. The City's project team also consulted with the two agencies on a strategy for developing and implementing winterization measures on the slope in preparation of the coming rainy season.

Any questions about the removal of mudflow debris may be directed to Project Manager Eric Vaughan at eric.vaughan@weareharris.com.

Now Possible to Report a 9-1-1 Emergency with a Text Message

Text to 9-1-1
Sausalito residents can now report 9-1-1 emergencies via text message. The service is provided by the Marin County Sheriff's Office, which manages dispatch for the Sausalito Police Department and Southern Marin Fire.

While voice calls to 9-1-1 are still the best way to report an emergency, sending a text message to 9-1-1 can be an option in the following situations:
  • If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability
  • If you cannot speak due to an injury or medical condition
  • If you are in a threatening situation and a voice call could increase the threat
  • If you cannot make a call because your mobile reception is poor
Just like 9-1-1 calls, texts should only be sent during actual emergencies. Any questions about text to 9-1-1 may be directed to the Sausalito Police Department at (415) 289-4170.
