Quiz Night - 19th October 7.30pm
The Quiz night is fast approaching.  This is an event that all members can enjoy, but is probably suited to the over 16s more than little people.  Teams are of up to 8 people, or just book and we will put you in a clever team.   This event is open to all your friends and family too.  Ticket price of just £8 includes a delicious posh ploughmans supper.

We have been trialling a system of booking through Sailing Club Manager, and to be honest it has proved to be rather difficult to use, so for the time being we will revert to the old fashioned method.  If you would like tickets,  please contact Jenny Snow on snowmail@btinternet.com .  Let me know if you are booking in a team with others or would like to be put in a team on the night.

Comms from the Commodore

Last week Papercourt invited representatives from half a dozen of our nearest Sailing Club neighbours to visit us at Papercourt, so we could all share our knowledge and experiences.  The evening was a great success, and we have now set up a regular liaison meeting format for the future, which will hopefully be to the benefit of all the clubs involved.  My thanks to Jeremy Riley for the spade work, and Clive White for feeding everyone.

We hope to use the intel we gained on the night to make our club even more vibrant and successful.

Fraser Hayden, Commodore

Trophies
As our Trophies guru Sue is going to be away just before the Annual Dinner, we need your trophies returned early this year.

Please polish them brightly and return to the Galley Store - nowhere else please - BEFORE THE END OF SEPTEMBER.  Thank you

and talking of saving the date.........................................

Social Events in the pipeline

Fireworks supper will be on 2nd November - Fireworks on the green and fun and games in the clubhouse.

Annual Dinner and Prize Giving is returning to Hoebridge Golf Club on 23rd November

In Weed news  -  weed cutting continues to keep the main sailing area clear.

Class Racing Day - Saturday 5th October

This is a day when the usual format of races changes, so that we have starts for each class, so it doesn't matter if you never beat the Solos, you will not be racing against them, just sharing the same water, with class prizes on the day.  Four races briefing at 10.30am.  For our youth racers, we hope you will join in with at least the first two races in the morning, with your own class starts,  but of course we would love you to stay all day.

Open Meetings

Its that time of year when there are several open meetings on the lake:

Sunday 29th September - Aero and RS200 Open Meetings - all welcome, but lake closed to other classes - see posters below

Sunday 13th October - Solo Open Meeting - all welcome, but lake closed to other classes see poster below.

Sunday 20th October - Enterprise Open Meeting - combined with normal club racing and cruising.

Finding your sailing soul-mate - using technology old and new!

Some people love to helm, some love to crew, some people have their own boats, some do not, and some would like to share the cost of hiring a two-hander.  We are going to put up a board in the hallway on Saturdays for helms and crews to try to make contact.   However we thought there might be an alternative to turn up and see who is there, by setting up a Whatsapp group for those who would like to find their sailing soulmates.   If you are interested in this, please send a text to Jenny on 07752 333486, and I will set up a Whatsapp group if there is some interest.

A Bit of Health and Safety Advice

If using the pressure washer to clean the bird excreta from the pontoons this has a slight risk of creating contaminated water droplets in the mist generated by the
pressure washer. (Psittacosis) This risk is suitably controlled by wearing a disposable mask supplies of which are now in the boathouse. If the pontoons are just brushed off there is no risk so, if pressure washing the pontoons, please use the mask supplied, and of course however you choose to do the job, please wash hands carefully afterwards.

Wednesday Cruising

Wednesday 11th saw a keen band of  Evening Cruisers make the most of their last opportunity to enjoy an evening sail now that the nights are drawing in, followed by more delicious food and nibbles than they could all devour despite their best endeavours!  This season has seen a good turnout of keen Wednesday evening cruisers who have been happy to put in time on the water to brush up and improve their skills and experience – and Papercourt has not let them down inasmuch as the evening wind nearly always subsided to an appropriate breeze making it worthy of getting out there and just enjoying. And this last Wednesday was also marked by the most spectacular evening sky as the sun turned the clouds, albeit briefly, into the most glorious colours .

Don’t forget though, all you keen cruisers and potential racers that there are still plenty of opportunities for you to get on the water over most weekends (further details are shown in the Spring/Summer, or Winter Sailing Programmes on the Papercourt website – so, see you out there!

David Birch – Cruising Captain

Chairs Up for Grabs

Don't Forget - the old Tub Chairs in the clubhouse will be replaced, as soon as the current refurbishment works are completed.  If you or anyone you know, or any youth groups could make use of any number of the chairs, please just help yourself.  It would be great if they could be re-purposed, rather than end up in landfill.
