Graduation

Graduation is a very special day set aside to recognize the achievements and hard work of the students. Sometimes, it may be the only really special celebration in a young person's life.  This September, we were fortunate to have nine GLK scholarship recipients celebrate their graduations:  five from primary school, three from secondary school, and one from nursing school. We say "Hongera!"  or "Congratulations!" to all of them.  Well done!
GLK Graduates - September 2019
Eveline
Eveline
Eveline, who has been a GLK scholar since the time of her mother's death in 2016, was graduated with many honors from Karume Day and Boarding English Medium Primary School (KADBEMPS) in Bukoba.

Eveline was a school leader and performed well in her class (a "promising girl" says her home teacher). At graduation, she took most of the special awards, including one for "general performance."  Trustee Grace attended the ceremony.

Avitus
Avitus, who was graduated from Kibeta English Medium Primary School (KEMPS), wrote of his thanks to his sponsor, Linda Voss. He included his drawing (below) of a boxer punching out some of his exam results which were amazing.  Avitus also received an award for computer training.

Jonia

For over ten years, since 2008, Jonia has been a GLK Scholar thanks to the Barry family.  Chris Barry and her family have supported Jonia through her academic journey.  Jonia has worked hard to achieve her goals despite some health challenges.  We are so happy to celebrate her graduation from Iluhya Secondary School.

This year, the scholarship fund was called in to help out a nursing student who, through a series of extreme family emergencies, was unable to find funding for his final semester in nursing school.
Avith was on the verge of being expelled due to lack of finances shortly before completing his nursing degree. We were able to assist him and are happy to report that Avith was graduated in September with his nursing degree - including a special award for academic performance in theory.

Anitha
Anitha
Anitha wrote to her sponsors, Inge and Bob Schnut, to give her thanks for their support, gifts, and uniforms over the last five years.  She graduated from Kibeta English Medium Primary School and prepared for the government national exams that follow in the weeks following the celebration.

Sima
Laurencia, known to us as "Sima", came to GLK in 2016 as a very bright student beginning her secondary school course of study. Her father had died in 2013 leaving the family with no means of support.  Sima's confidence impressed us and we decided to help her with her studies.  On Friday, September 27th, she graduated from Lweru Katoke Secondary School.  She received a special award for "Outstanding Achievement and Effort in Literature in English".  Thanks to Sima's sponsor, Lisa Zulawski for contributing to this success. Well done!

Lightness
Lightness
Lightness graduated from primary school at Bethania Primary School in Kemondo.  Her older brother David, also a GLK scholar, and her mother were invited to sing together as a part of the graduation ceremonies. Special thanks to Deb Johnson for her support and care of Lightness.

Janeth
Janeth, who was graduated from Kibeta English Medium Primary School (KEMPS), wrote a thank you letter which included this reflection on life at this important transition:

"A beautiful life does not just happen. It is built daily with love, laughter, sacrifice, patience, grace and forgiveness. Never get tired of doing little things for others. Sometime those little things occupy the biggest part of their heart. Thank you!"
Evadine (Left)
with her mother and grandmother

After completing her secondary school studies, Evadine attended graduation festivities together with her mother and grandmother. She wore a traditional print dress and celebrated with cake. Evadine has been a GLK scholar for four years at Josiah Girls Secondary School. She gives special thanks to Sally Jo Bettesworth for making her "dreams come true."
A very special THANKS to GLK Field Representative, Arnold Philemon, for attending graduations and caring for our scholar's needs

Thank you for the gift of education.
