The L.A. Daily News' Alexander on the importance of coming AD hires at USC & UCLA, "...the main point is that even with the inefficiency of the conference office, what happens with the Los Angeles schools matters, more so than whatever happens in Eugene or Seattle, Palo Alto or Tucson or Salt Lake City. Fans elsewhere in the conference don’t want to hear it, but when USC and UCLA are successful, more people across the country notice. […] Neither school can afford to whiff this time. The entire conference has a stake in USC and UCLA getting this right." (link)
Pac-12 Commish Scott says he's "open to looking at" expanding the College Football Playoff, though he recognizes a "number of impediments" to doing so. Scott also notes, "The first thing I’d say, is that we have to do better in football. We have to have elite teams break through. [...] It’s become, for many people, did you make the playoff or not? And that is what it is,. Maybe that’s an unintended consequence or byproduct, but I think it’s a fair assessment of the reality. So we’ve got to more frequently have teams in the playoff. That’s the expectation I have and our presidents and chancellors have and our athletic directors have. There’s a tremendous amount of effort and work the athletic directors are doing in terms of investing in facilities, hiring coaches, supporting them with (salary) pools for assistants and analysts and support for the student-athletes." More from the San Jose Mercury News' Wilner as Cal is the only remaining unbeaten in the league. (link)
Syracuse gets a $25M gift from former FB student-athlete Lally during its home game against Western Michigan yesterday. Lally: "For Syracuse University Athletics to become even more competitive in both the ACC and on the national stage, the program needs to have first-class facilities, operations and support. Laura and I are committed to Syracuse University Athletics, and in particular positioning the university to attract, recruit and retain high-performing student-athletes who succeed on and off the field, inside and outside the classroom and in their communities." No exact indication on where the money will be spent, but more details to come this fall. (link)
"Nike has been fully cooperating with the government’s investigation into amateur basketball for nearly two years." On Friday, The Swoosh confirmed its coordination with the federal government in connection to MBB-FBI developments as it pushed back on headlining attorney Avenatti's attempt at subpoenas. Another key passage from The Oregonian's Graves, "Peter Skinner, an attorney with the prominent Boies Schiller Flexner law firm in New York city, said the documents that Avenatti is seeking are already in the hands of the government. Nike gave them to the government months ago." (link)
Ole Miss Interim AD Carter: "We are extremely disappointed with the officiating at the end of the game and are expecting a full explanation from the Pac-12 regarding the call & subsequent non-review of the 3rd down play. We feel strongly the call should have been reviewed by the Pac-12 officials in the replay booth. Even if the play didn't result in a touchdown, the spot of the ball on 4th down was questionable." That's in response to the Rebels coming up inches short of a TD as time expired & would have led to a game-tying two-point attempt. (link)
We may be seeing more changes to the Texas FB student gate entry policies again as wait times to get into Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium reached two hours with a "block-long line" outside and 50% the student section was empty in the first half. (link)
Clemson fans at last night's kick against Charlotte were part of a halftime treat as Disney filmed a scene of its upcoming movie 'Safety.' The Athletic's Raynor, "It's halftime. So it's also movie time. It's 38-3, real Clemson with fake Clemson about to run down the hill. Also LOL they asked fans to put away their smartphones since they didn't exist in 2006 but they're too excited and whipped them out anyway." (link- scroll down, link - fake team intro)
ESPN College GameDay is headed back to Lincoln for the first time since 2007 as Nebraska hosts Ohio State. Kick scheduled for 7:30p est on ABC. (link)
Iowa has now reopened its investigation into allegations of "verbal, physical and sexual abuse" toward members of its band at the Iowa State game last weekend. Iowa spokeswoman Beck after student members of the band took to social media to air their complaints: "[it became clear] we had not shared enough information with our students about the steps the university has taken to address the concerns. Student safety is our No. 1 priority and we are committed to ensuring a safe experience on game day for our students." (link); Here is the letter from Iowa Band Director Bush to the "Hawkeye Marching Band Family," which reads, in part: "Rivalries can create some of the most fun, exciting moments in college football, but when they bring out the worst in fans, nobody wins. On Saturday, Hawkeye Marching Band students and staff were the target of rude and vulgar behavior. On several occasions, the behavior turned violent. To protect the privacy of our students, I cannot elaborate on those specific details. However, I can assure you that we are, and we have always been, a family." (link)
After a closely played matchup in Athens last night, Georgia AD McGarity on extending a deal with Notre Dame, "We’d love to continue this series; Notre Dame is always very attractive. But I can tell you that I haven’t had any discussions with (Notre Dame AD) Jack (Swarbrick) on it." Sanford Stadium also showed off its new lights setup with a really neat game intro sequence. (link - renewal, link - lights)
TicketNews' Fuller takes a close look at StubHub as reports indicate it's on the sales block. Thesis: "StubHub is a marketing company. Its business model is to spend more than $100 million annually on Google keywords, Facebook ads, and other social media presence to drive ticket sales. This gives them the scale to block out other potential competition. […] StubHub is making some smaller direct purchase deals and has licensed vendor relationships with certain sports teams, it has almost no control over either the supply or distribution of the tickets it sells. […] Because of the intrinsic risks of losing supply, distribution or both, a buyer of StubHub has to look at its future revenue stream as having a high risk of coming to an abrupt end. Therefore the present value of the future cash flow from StubHub has to be analyzed accordingly." A bit more. (link)
Also Noticed: UCLA FB HC Kelly on his squad's remarkable 67-63 comeback win late last night/early this morning, "It's a Pac-12 After Dark win." Bruins were down 32 in the 3rd quarter. Highest scoring game in Pac-12 history. (link, link); A fire sprinkler pipe broke in the ceiling of UTSA's FB locker room at Apogee Stadium leaving quite a bit of standing water on the floor. (link); A campus-wide power outage at Eastern Michigan delayed the start of the FB game against Central Connecticut yesterday by 15 minutes and a lightning strike halted play for 47 minutes mid-game. (link); Refs had to ask the crowd to "please refrain from shooting lasers on the field" as multiple laser pointer interruptions happened during the Baylor-Rice matchup. (link); Just 19 minutes after kickoff, Vanderbilt reached its $50K fundraising goal for the Turner Cockrell memorial foundation. New goal in the 82-hour fundraising effort is to reach $82K to honor the late No. 82. It ends Tuesday at 9 p.m. (link)
