Working with Meaning
A painting workshop with Laura Summer
November 16-19

In this 4 day workshop we will work with painting in relation to words. How does a painting arise from a poem? Can a poem arise from a painting? How can we create out of meaning so that our viewer experiences their own meaning. How can we bring something and yet leave our viewer free? How do we influence each other?

Working with many media including watercolor, pastel, ink, collage and poetry we will explore these questions.

No experience is necessary – the techniques are both exciting and forgiving.

Like treasure hidden by the earth,
Like taste hidden by the fruit,
Like gold hidden by the stone,
Like oil hidden by the sesame seed,
Like fire hidden by the wood,
Channamallikarjuna, jasmine-tender,
Hides as the being behind becoming;
No one knows him.

Akka Mahadevi (India, 1130-1160)
